An Immutable Voice: Harford Students Seek Voting Rights On Board Of Education

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

Should the student member on the Harford County Board of Education have a vote? Students say yes, but some adult board members say no, citing students’ lack of maturity and experience.

That dismissive description hardly fits the Harford County Public School students who have been advocating for the vote. Students like Greg Waterworth and Annie Olezczuk have done their research. They’ve networked with fellow students across the state, rallied local support, distributed petitions, spoken out at public meetings, made presentations to PTAs, met with elected officials and convinced many adults (myself included) that students can make vital contributions as voting members of the school board.

Sen. Mikulski Announces Major Federal Investments In Maryland Transportation Projects

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee, today announced the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act includes funding for key Maryland transportation projects and fulfills her promise to help communities manage growth related to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission’s recommendations.

A BRAC-READY MARYLAND

Senator Mikulski, chair of the Maryland congressional delegation, has fought for several years to prepare Maryland communities and military bases for the BRAC process, which will bring thousands of new employees to the state. This includes 10,000 new U.S. jobs, in addition to 85,000 existing jobs on bases and up to 40,000 non-direct jobs.

“My promises made to BRAC-impacted communities are promises kept. BRAC brings great opportunities, but it also brings great challenges. That’s why I want to make sure Maryland has what it needs in the federal checkbook to implement the BRAC recommendations ...Continue Reading

Del. Impallaria: Annapolis Update #3 – Bad Bills and Good Bills

For such a small state, Maryland has what other states dream of – a fantastic transportation hub with seaports, rail, federal highways, large military bases which are growing due to BRAC – yet we have become a federal welfare state. What do I mean? For the last seven years I have watched this legislature spend itself into a hole. Never have they shown restraint in spending, nor have they been able to control their lust for your money. I, on the other hand, have voted against the last six budgets. I hoped that this year would see a reduction in spending. But this will not happen because of Pres. Obama’s big welfare check disguised as a stimulus package. And where does the federal money come from? Out of your pocket, your children’s pockets, and your grandchildren’s pockets. It is a debt ...Continue Reading

BGE: Blame The Weather, Not Us – State Agency Looks Into Recent Spike In Utility Bills

Filed as Local Ink with 7 comments

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. customers heated up about higher bills this winter can blame unusually cold weather for most the spike, the utility told state officials Thursday.

Though energy costs are slightly higher than last year, increased usage brought on by bitter cold temperatures is the biggest reason some ratepayers have seen their bills double in recent months, BGE representatives told the state’s Public Service Commission.

Ending The Sad Competition: Tuition Waivers For Children Of Fallen Heroes

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

Dagger readers may remember the family of Lynne Parry. Her husband, Baltimore County Police Detective Sergeant Mark Parry was tragically killed in the line of duty in 2002. As police survivors, Lynne’s children qualified for the state-funded Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship, which offsets the cost of college tuition for the families of fallen heroes in Maryland. But last year, the money for the Conroy Scholarship ran out and Lynne’s son was one of 40 qualified applicants put on a waiting list.

Del. Stifler’s Sex Offender and Mortgage Fraud Proposals Find Bipartisan Agreement

Two Legislative proposals by Harford County State Delegate Donna Stifler (R, 35A) today won the unanimous approval of the Maryland House of Delegates.

Stifler’s bill, HB 96 requires sexual offenders to update their pictures on the state sex offender registry at least every six months. Previously, offenders could go one year or longer without updating their photo.

“This is one more step in the effort to keep our kids safe from predators,” said Stifler.

Stifler’s second proposal, HB 79, seeks to prevent fraud in mortgage appraisals. It expands the coverage of the Maryland Mortgage Fraud Protection Act by prohibiting the creation of documents used in the mortgage process that omit, misstate or deliberately misrepresent factual information.

“At this time of a housing crisis, it is very important that the mortgage process for all Marylanders be based on truthful and accurate information,” said Stifler. “We owe that to people who work hard and play ...Continue Reading

Councilman Guthrie Asks For Public To Join Fight Against Joppa Incinerator Expansion

The following was provided by Harford County Councilman Dion Guthrie:

Many of you are aware of the four hundred million dollar project to be built in District “A” between Joppatowne and Edgewood at the end of Rt. 152, right before it goes into APG.

As most of you know, I have drafted four or five amendments to insure that the area would be free of new truck traffic IF they cut a new road through from Rt. 24 to the backside of the new incinerator plant.

The administration is VEHEMENTLY OPPOSED to all of my amendments. It is important for all of you to contact the Council Members for them to support those amendments. Without those amendments, we are going to get trash trucks going up and down Rt. 152 into APG twenty-four hours a day, six days a week. That will be in addition to the trucks that run ...Continue Reading
