Havre De Grace, Md – The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) are investigating a boating accident that occurred at 2:00 PM on December 6, 2009 on the Susquehanna River near Havre De Grace.
Preliminary investigation reveals that a 21 foot Ranger bass boat was being operated at a high rate of speed when it struck a submerged object. The force of the collision propelled the vessel’s 225 hp outboard engine into the passenger compartment of the vessel.
The engine struck the operator, Walter Lawrence Ross Jr., age 52 of Havre De Grace, Md. and Willie Barrett Jr., age 44 of Middle River, Md. Barrett was ejected form the vessel. Ross used his cell phone to summon help. Ross and Barrett were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.
Area fire companies responded to the scene and transported the victims to shore. Ross was transported to Bay View Hospital and Barrett was transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with serious injuries.
NRP Special Operation Division is continuing the investigation into the boating accident.
