Harford County government:
On Friday, May 20, some 126 cyclists participated in the ninth annual Bike to Work Day rally in Bel Air at the Harford County Government Administration Building. Bike to Work Day is a nationally observed day to encourage and recognize bicycling as a healthy, clean commuting option.
Each May Harford County Government celebrates Clean Commute Month with activities and events to highlight alternative transportation options such as using transit, walking, cycling, carpooling, and telecommuting. All of these alternative transportation options help to reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions while creating a healthier and cleaner environment. Bike to Work Day and the other events of Clean Commute Month raise citizens’ awareness of the locally-available alternative transportation options.
Mary F. Chance, Director of Administration, and County Councilman Richard C. Slutzky welcomed cyclists to the rally, while Harford County Executive David R. Craig announced the winners of the Cycle Smackdown, a competition among Harford County businesses and organizations whereby employees from various sized companies compete against each other to get the most number of registrants to bike to work.
This year Ecotone, Inc. claimed the trophy for the small company category, while Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and SAIC tied to share the title for the large company category, with Blue Dot Services of Maryland receiving an honorable mention.
Tim Hartley of 103.7 WXCY emceed the event, which included an escorted bike parade through downtown Bel Air by the Bel Air Police Department and the presentation of over 25 prizes donated from numerous sponsors. Sponsors of the event included the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, Bicycle Connection Express, AAA Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education, The Arena Club, Applebee’s, APGFCU, Bel Air Athletic Club, Bel Air Downtown Alliance, Bagel Works, BGE Smart Energy Program, Biller Bike’s, Bill Bateman’s Bistro of Havre de Grace, Charm City Run, Chesapeake Cycle and Sport, Einstein Bros.
