From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
On Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m., a Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputy was seriously injured when his patrol vehicle was struck by a 2006 Nissan 350Z at the intersection of SR 40 and SR 152. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle was being operated by DFC Brad Sives, # 835, who was on duty, at the time of the accident. The 2006 Nissan 350Z was driven by Kevin G. Johnstone, 21, of the 900 block of Cedar Crest Court in Edgewood MD. There was also a male passenger in the 2006 Nissan 350Z at the time of the accident.
Preliminary investigation has determined that the 2006 Nissan 350Z was traveling westbound on SR 40 and while attempting to make a right hand turn on to northbound SR 152, Johnstone lost control of his vehicle. Traveling at a high rate of speed, the 2006 Nissan 350Z hit the median on SR 152, went airborne and struck the deputy’s patrol car on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The deputy’s patrol car was pushed into the southbound shoulder of the roadway on SR152. DFC Sives was entrapped in the vehicle for approximately 45 minutes, while members of the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company worked to extricate him from his patrol vehicle. He was conscious and alert when he was flown to the University of MD Shock Trauma Center by Maryland State Police Trooper 1 for treatment of his injuries. At this time he is listed in stable condition and has hired a car accident lawyer for guidance on the case.
Kevin Johnstone, the driver of the 2006 Nissan 350Z, and his passenger were not injured and were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Preliminary investigation has determined that Johnstone was operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and transported to the Harford County Inter Agency Processing Center. Johnstone, age 19, has been charged at this time with Driving Under the Influence, Driving Under the Influence per se, failure to control speed to avoid collision, reckless and negligent driving. He is currently awaiting an appearance before the District Court Commissioner and has contacted a drunk driving accident lawyer.
DFC Brad Sives, # 835, 26, is a four year veteran of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and assigned to the Police Services Bureau, Southern Precinct, Shift # 1.
UPDATE (8:02 a.m.): Sives was released from the hospital at approximately 7:30 a.m., according to Monica Worrell, spokeswoman for the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. The intersection of routes 152 and 40 has been reopened to all traffic.

Here’s to Deputy Sives recovering ASAP! God Bless.
To the Editor:
You reported Johnstone’s age as 21 y/o and then 19 y/o. Which is correct? Please have someone check facts as this makes other alleged facts suspects.
Thanks.
