From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
On Friday, August 5, 2011, professionals from Harford County’s local law enforcement community will host their third annual Public Safety Awareness night at the Target Store in Aberdeen, MD from 4pm – 7pm. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the many public safety services available to the citizens of Harford County.
Citizens will be able to visit with various law enforcement agencies to learn more about such topics as violent crime and personal safety, crime prevention, internet safety, drug abuse, home/neighborhood safety and fraud and identity theft.
Spotlight on
Drug “Take Back” Station – Harford County Task Force and the Harford County Office of Drug Control Policy will be on hand to provide Harford County citizens with an opportunity to turn in their expired, unused and unwanted prescription medicines. The Drug Take back program aims to collect powerful drugs that while beneficial to patients, could easily fall in the wrong hands if left to languish in the home. Citizens will be able to turn in pills, powders, and other solid medicines anonymously and without fear of prosecution; authorities will then safely destroy the medications by incinerating them.
Seat Belt Convincer – Maryland State Police will provide seat belt convincer demonstrations. The seat belt convincer is an easy to use educational tool that allows the riders to experience a force, up to five times their body weight, simulating a 5-7 mph crash. The Convincer was developed to educate the general public of how beneficial the use of seat belts can be even when involved in a low speed collision. It allows the rider to experience the surprising amount of force generated with such a low speed collision and to gain respect for the benefit that a seat belt can provide.
Bike Rodeo – Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies will provide this bicycle safety clinic for children ages 5 to 12. Featured will be bike safety inspections, a bike safety lesson and an opportunity to ride a fun obstacle course. The obstacle course is set up by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office to test your bike riding skills. All skill levels are encouraged to participate, however riders should be past the training wheels stage of riding to engage in this activity successfully. Reservations for participation are encouraged – contact communitypolicing@harfordsheriff.org or 410-612-1670.
In addition to the spotlighted items and wealth of crime prevention information provided, there will be K9 demonstrations, specialized law enforcement vehicles, child safety seat installation demonstrations and a dunking booth to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club.
Participating agencies include: Target, Harford County Task Force, Harford County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, APG Police Department, Aberdeen Police Department, Bel Air Police Department, Child Advocacy Center, Havre de Grace Police Department, Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office, United States Attorney’s Office, Maryland Kids in Safety Seats Organization and the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.
