From the office of Del. Glen Glass:
Maryland is a great place to live! Surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay to the east, mountains to the west with seafood, fishing, hunting, boating, crabbing and where I live in Aberdeen, our own worldwide tourist attraction, Ripkin Stadium. The Little League Baseball series last weekend was a success. As a native Marylander and young boy I grew up, like many young boys, playing Little League baseball. Sports teaches children a valuable lesson in teamwork. Despite the bad weather, the Bel Air BBQ Bash was a huge success. Havre de Grace’s Seafood Festival had good food, nice people and the Charlie Daniels Band (saw them while in the Army in Savannah, Georgia). Walking along Tydings Park I remembered why I love Maryland so much. I met a bird watching tourist from New Jersey. We watched an Osprey swoop down and catch a fish, but before the Osprey could eat it a Bald Eagle tried to attack and take the fish. While the Bald Eagle chased the Osprey, it dropped the fish into the water. Watching that made me think of what’s happening around Maryland and elsewhere in the world. Even though we are sometimes overwhelmed by what’s going on with the economy, tolls, taxes and education we need to continue pursuing what’s right for our families and children. We can’t give in and let it be taken away! We have an ‘out of control Tax Train’ in Annapolis that we need to keep chasing until it ‘drops the fish’.
I stand firm against any new taxes or increases.
It’s always a pleasure talking to everyone and I continue to be inspired by your thoughts and comments.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay in touch!
Glen Glass

How about something a little more thought provoking or creative than, “I stand firm against any new taxes or increases”.
Rob in Bel Air says
Considering the fact that Annapolis is run by a bunch of out of control tax and spend liberals, standing against tax increases is all he needs to say or do.
Harford County Jobs says
My point is, what is Del. Glass’ plan? Where is he going to cut spending? How will you feel if his plan negatively impacts you or your job?
You can probably train a parrot to say, “I stand firm against any new taxes or increases”.
ALEX R says
Harford County Jobs,
Of course you can train a parrot to say “I stand firm against new taxes.” But you can’t get a Democrat to actually do it even if they say it and likewise for many Republicans. Listen carefully, my friend. No new taxes. Not a dime. There is plenty of money to do what needs to be done just not plenty to do what the Animal Farm piggies want to do. Plenty of money for schools, kids, elderly, roads, sick, those who can’t work, police, fire. Did Imiss any of the hot buttons that are used to try to scare us? Let the elected figure out how to reallocate it instead of just saying they need more because they don’t have the leadership to make the difficult decisions. If they won’t do it then we elect someone who will. But not another dime.
Cdev says
So exactly where will you cut spending!!!!
Just like a family budget it is well and good to say I will not work for more income (raise taxes) but to do so you need to cut out some of the liesure activities and eating out (expenditures).
So what exactly are we going to cut.
This is the difference between Bachman and Paul. Paul has said what he will cut. We may not like the total troop withdraw from Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Korea, Italy, Germany, Japan etc. but at least it makes number sense. Bachman has yet to give specific cuts.
Joan Ryder says
I heard at my realtor meeting yesterday that O’Malley wants no more septic systems in Maryland. He wants everyone on public sewer so he can collect more money. This was presented last yearand defeated; however, they said it would be brought up again. That would kill development in rural areas.
decoydude says
I am not a fan of the governor or his opposition. Actually it is a fiscally conservative solution. Too many tax dollars support residential sprawl. We don’t need more people sucking off the system. The return on the investment for the taxpayer is negative. We don’t have a shortage of workers. We do have a shortage of good jobs and highly skilled workers. I support more commercial and industrial development in areas where jobs are needed. I understand that my position would be unpopular with some special interests.
Rob in Bel Air says
Why would O’Malley worry . . . we pick up the cost of his “crap” everyday.
Fogdog says
What he should have given is a list of services the state now provides that should be cut out.
For starters how about cutting out the law that says anyone over the age of 65 can go to college free. How does this benefit the tax payers?
Rob in Bel Air says
That’s does not necessarily place a big burden on taxpayers. First, it generally applies to non-credit classes. The classes run to begin with so having a few seniors in these classes at a reduced cost or no cost is not a huge expense. If they allow it for credit classes, the same applies. Moreover, not all classes allow senior waivers.
In regard to seniors, many have worked most of their lives paying their due by fighting in wars, raising families, paying taxes, etc. Many of us will benefit from that as we age.
I have a great deal of respect for our seniors. When I see our older gentleman wearing their VFW / AL hats, I say hi and/or wave to them acknowledging their service to this country (and us).
If you want to save money at the “community-college” or University level, perhaps you should support the movement against “in-state tuition breaks for illegals.” Another savings is in the financial aid area. There are students who receive financial aid for classes, show up the first day and that’s the last time they are seen. They receive a failing grade but do not have to pay back the money. Another thing to look at is the amount of money this country pay for foreign students.
Bottom line: There is a geat deal of government waste in the education department . . . but senior waivers for college classes is a “drop in the bucket” compared to other things.
Cdev says
Yes but when you look in the HCC non-credit book that came this week they are offering, for free, classes that college kids do not take. Like Water Aerobics at odd times or living in your later years etc. These classes are targeted to seniors, cost extra money to run and are costing tax money. I am not opposed to it but do not argue that free senior tuition is just a little bit. it takes alot of little bits to add up to alot
HYDESMANN says
Here is a simple way to cut taxes. Start with a 10% across the board cut of all state spending and let the managers of each department decide where to cut. Use the many rainy day funds for emergencys. That’s what they’re for. Stop ALL aid to illegals.that should balance the budget by next year. Speaking of illegals, has anyone heard of Obama’s new plan to bypass congress and give millions of illegals amnesty by telling ICE (by ex, order) not to deport any illegal unless they have committed a crime? I thought being here illegally was a crime.
When will it stop says
@ Rob in Belair. Of course the benefits for seniors is a drop in the bucket, I would expect you to take the position because you are a senior++ and it would be a case of cut someone else’s benefits, not mine. Typical reptard reponse. And of course the money is getting spent is Annapolis, you have reminded us every single day on this board. Yet your arguement stops there exposing your shallow mind. You call libs names and you never back anything up, exposing you r low level of educatuon and maturity (don’t confuse maturity with age). You act as if the Reptards ran the country at no cost when actually they ran it into the ground with two wars, and a bailout with cut taxes. It doesn’t take a math degree to work out the numbers.
Ryan Burbey says
Dear Mr. Glass,
I see you had time to post another rambling article about cutting funding. However, you still have not told us from where your numbers in the last article came. How did you ascertain that 80% of Marylanders disagree with the Dream Act? Why should we trust anything you assert if you can not base your arguments in facts rather than conjecture? I and the rest of your constituents are still awaiting your response.
Sincerely,
Ryan Burbey
Clay says
Where is the governor going to cut? He could start by not giving millions to the organization in Annapolis that assists illegal aliens. I cant disagree with stopping so much rural development and spending the time on commerical and business development for jobs. That could start by cutting taxes for incoming businesses like Texas which doesnt tax businesses with state taxes. Isnt the largest part of the budget education? If there is no jobs for the graduating kids, does it really matter if they were educated in a portable classroom? I would rather be educated in the hallway by a teacher who cares than in a new school by one who doesnt. Also, the state pays for teacher retirement, the only state that does I believe. We also have too many people on public assistance. I would work and do something if I had to before being on public assistance. This goes for the whole country. I wonder how many get public assistance in Mexico? Not many. Dont worry however, the Democrats will always let them come here to work, even though taxes may not be coming out of their pay.
Joseph Smith says
I’m really getting tired of anti-government types complaining about taxes. What is it that you people actually want? I hear lots of generalities but no specifics. To govern is to be concerned about the details. What services do you approve of and how do you recommend the government pay for them? Or, are you interested in a total laissez-faire system where all, even the young, elderly and infirm, have to eek out a living as best they can. We tried that once, it was called the Depression. We as a society decided that this was not an acceptable way for people to live and created programs to eliminate the worst excesses of poverty. Is it perfect? No. But that doesn’t mean we scrap the entire thing. You can say leave it to the churches and to charity but, believe it or not, government – due to its scale – can provide much more at less cost and more efficiently than any charity or church.
It’s easy to complain but tell me what you’re proposing to do to fix what you think is wrong. If you can’t do that, get off your soapbox.
Porter says
@JOSEPH SMITH The government has been unsuccessful in its war on poverty and entitlement programs. We spend $300 billion a month federally and take in $180 billion borrowing the difference, in what world would this unsustainable fiasco be termed a success?
You could tax millionaires at 100% and it still would not make up the shortfall.
Liberal/progressives hate capitalism and producers, but want the fruits of their labor to redistribute. You are astoundingly economically and financially illiterate to think wealth redistribution works when there is not one country you can show as an example of a social progressivism’s success.
Proud to be Liberal says
PORTER: How can you not understand that just 400 families have more wealth that 150,000,000 Americans and they pay at a lower rate than you do? How can you defend that? Are you that rich? And let’s not call them anything but what many are, parasites.
Paul says
Hey Proud,
Not Porter, but I have a couple comments:
“How can you not understand that just 400 families have more wealth that 150,000,000 Americans and they pay at a lower rate than you do?” – It appears that Porter is reasonably intelligent and most likely understands this. I don’t have a problem with this. I don’t believe in sharing the wealth. I believe in people working.
“How can you defend that?” – It is easily defended. Free market and capitalism.
“Are you that rich?” – Not even close. But I strive to be that rich one day where I can pay more in taxes than millions combined.
“And let’s not call them anything but what many are, parasites.” – Some are parasites, some aren’t. Some have jobs, and those that do are typically not parasites. Many of those that don’t, are. There are some that don’t have jobs that are not, but, its hard to tell which is which any more.
Anyways, have a nice day.
Paul
Porter says
@PROUD TO BE LIBERAL It’s a lie to say that these rich people pay a lower tax rate. They pay whatever ordinary income rate based on their Adjusted Gross Income and 15% for long term capital gains.
Liberals want to blend ordinary income tax rates with capital gains rates and then make dishonest comparisons.
Furthermore liberals fail to mention that capital gains are paid out to investors after the C-Corporation have paid corporate income taxes.
