From John Bachman, Technology Educator, Joppatowne High School:
A new school year means another Electrathon America competition for Harford County Schools.
Spearheaded five years ago at Fallston HS by Jamieson DuRette (Now teaching Tech Ed at Joppatowne High School,) this years’competition boast four high school teams, including Fallston, Bel Air, Havre de Grace, and Joppatowne.
The objective seems simple; to drive an electrically powered vehicle as far as possible in one hour on a closed loop course using limited electrical power. The key elements are a lightweight design, good aerodynamics, and low rolling resistance.
The entries from the various schools range from steel and fiberglass kit-based designs to completely custom creations involving monocoque chassis and chromoly suspensions. Joppatowne is working on their first vehicle using a ladder frame design based upon, well, an aluminum ladder.
The first event is a “Test and Tune” on April 11th, with the official race event on May 7th. Both events are sanctioned by Electrathon America and will be held at the Maryland State Police Driver Training Unit in Sykesville, MD.
