From Harford Community College:
Harford Community College students Kayla Bishop and Hannah Loftus were selected as members of the 2012 All-Maryland Academic Team. The honor recognizes the scholarly achievements of students enrolled in Maryland’s Community Colleges.
Kayla and Hanna were among the more than 1,700 community, technical, and junior college nominees for the 2012 All-USA Community College Academic Team this year. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the College and the community.
Kayla, who was enrolled in the honors program at HCC, served as the Phi Theta Kappa executive president for the last two semesters. She plans to complete a bachelor’s degree in business administration and economics. Kayla hopes to earn a master’s degree in business while working in a management position.
Hannah, who earned an Associate’s degree in General Studies, is the recipient of the Alfred C. O’Connell Scholarship and also served as secretary of service for Phi Theta Kappa. She plans to attend college in North Carolina to complete her bachelor’s degree, then earn a master’s degree, and ultimately pursue a career as an anthropologist. While attending HCC, she participated in Operation Exodus, a nonprofit organization in New York City, where she worked with struggling children, helping them become motivated to read and further their education.
The 2012 All-USA Community College Academic Team Competition is presented by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group.
Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for two-year colleges and requires a 3.5 GPA or higher with at least 12 credits of coursework completed in a program leading to an Associate’s degree. The Maryland All-State Academic Team Recognition was introduced in 1995 as a way to recognize the scholastic achievement and leadership among the students in Maryland’s community colleges.
