From the 21034 Community E-News Editors:
Darlington Independence Day Celebration Committee
Dear Friends and Neighbors of the Darlington Community,
I am excited to announce that the 30th annual Darlington Independence Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 29th, 2013. We are thrilled to be able to bring this wonderful event to all of you again this year!
This year’s celebration will begin with the Independence Day Parade, with participants lining up at 4 PM at the Weigh Station on Route 1. The parade will begin at 5:30 PM. Anyone interested in participating in the parade should contact Jerry Scarborough at 410 836-3506 to register. Following the parade, there will be entertainment, including the Darlington Idol Contest and a spectacular fireworks display at dark at Francis Silver Park.
In addition, our wonderful food vendors will be returning this year with grilled items, homemade ice cream, and much more! Please patronize these vendors, located in the park, as they are the only food vendors who contribute a portion of their proceeds, a critical portion of our fundraising, to this event.
We are a small but committed group of individuals who work hard to make this possible each year, and we continue to need and count on your support. Please give what you can. Your checks can be made payable to the “Darlington Independence Day Celebration” and mailed to:

News from your Darlington Volunteer Fire Company
Summer is fast approaching. Think hydration. Be sure every member of your group hydrates before the start of outdoor activities. Soda, coffee and alcohol are very bad choices. They will actually make the situation worse. Consider water, flavored water, or a 50 / 50 sports drink and water mix. Stop at least hourly for a break and some water. One of the first signs of dehydration is a headache. So…..drink up!
This is a great time of year to think about helping your community. There are dozens of ways to do that. Becoming a firefighter or an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) are great ways to accomplish that. Please realize that it takes many, many hours of training to become certified in any of these positions. However, there is good news. As a member of the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company this training is free. And, you can receive college credit for many of these training classes. Also, as a member you can receive tax deductions, pension points, and be a part of a second family. Being a member of the Volunteer Emergency Services isn’t for everyone. But it is for those people that are organized, motivated, self starting and want to make a difference. Stop by and see us sometime. After all, we are neighbors helping neighbors since 1949. We are THE Darlington Volunteer Fire Company.

From our Friends at Delmarva Power
We would like to share the following tips to help keep you safe when working with or around electricity:
– If you see a downed wire, stay away and call the Delmarva Power emergency outage number: 1-800-898-8042.
– If you plan on doing any digging, call 811, the national “One Call Notification System” number, so that any utility lines can be marked prior to construction.
– Remind children to stay away from electric facilities such as substations, transmission towers and pad mounted transformers, also known as “green boxes.”
– When carrying long or tall items, such as ladders, tree saws and pool cleaning equipment, hold them parallel to the ground. Look up before you raise them into the air to be sure they’re clear of any power lines.
– Remember that electricity can move through conductive materials, such as water, metal, wood, aluminum, string and plastics.
– Stay away from overhead lines. Be watchful when trimming trees or working near the electrical connection to your property.
Introducing the Energy Wise Rewards Program and Peak Energy Savings Credits
How does Energy Wise Rewards work? During the peak electricity demand times in the summer, generally June through September, we’ll automatically cycle off and on participating central air conditioners and heat pumps to help reduce the region’s demand for electricity. These Energy Wise Rewards conservation periods occur on Peak Savings Days. This automatic reduction of your air conditioner energy use makes it easy for you to receive credits off your bill through the Peak Energy Savings Credit. There are typically five Peak Savings Days a summer.
You’ll receive a one-time Installation Credit of up to $80 off your bill and your choice of an energy-saving device at no charge! Enroll now (https://energywiserewards.delmarva.com/de/enroll/)
Please join Delmarva Power, on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 from 10am to Noon at the New Castle Regional Office in Newark, DE for “The Power of Preparedness” the 2013 DPL Weather Symposium. Darlington Pharmacy Owner, Robert Suter, Builds Solar Array behind the Building on Main Street
You may have noticed the newly installed solar PV (photovoltaic) array behind the pharmacy in Darlington. Lots of people are asking about it, so we decided to talk to building owner, Robert Suter. He said he was approached by ESI, Energy Systems & Installation, some time ago to see if he was interested in solar technology. He admits that he didn’t think solar technology was efficient or advanced enough, but the more he considered the option for renewable energy, the more convinced he became. He said, “We’re not going anywhere and the one acre field behind the building is vacant.” So he committed to a ten year investment to build the collector system as a move toward energy self-sufficiency, an idea that greatly appeals to him. The construction and installation phase is 90% complete with an estimated “turn on” in mid-July. Robert said the panels are warrantied for 25 years. But he will recoup his investment before then. Besides FREE electricity that feeds directly into the grid, he benefits from SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Certificates) that are available to commercial properties. In Maryland, 20% of all energy must be renewable by the year 2020. SRECs help meet that goal through the private market. Robert wants Delmarva Power to install the electric meter in a place where Darlington Pharmacy customers will be able to watch the meter needle run backwards! He has also put in a PV solar array at his Whiteford Pharmacy location. Look for notice of a grand ribbon cutting in the July 21034 E-News. For more information, you can call Robert at 410-452-5221.
The Deer Creek Coffee House presents
We’re About 9 on Saturday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Grace Memorial Episcopal Church Parish Hall
1022 Main St., Darlington, MD 21034
The contemporary folk trio of Katie Graybeal, Brian Gundersdorf and Pat Klink brings complex vocal harmonies and a poignant, outside-the-box songwriting approach to an upbeat, fun show.
“WA9 offers up a studio collection that is every bit as good as their live performances. Their lyrics weave haunting, occasionally open-ended tales of reality and life, of love and losses and searches for freedom and peace. With a sound that colorfully blends acoustic guitar backed harmonies with pop, blues, and coffeehouse rock, this trio from Baltimore delivers a positively enthralling performance.” -Robert Lindquist – Singer Magazine
Join us for the last show of the season!
The Lions Clubs of Darlington & Conowingo are joining to once again sponsor a fishing rodeo for children ages 3-15. In addition, there will be a casting contest prior to the start of fishing. While each child will receive a goody bag at registration, they are responsible for bringing their own equipment and bait. Hot dogs and drinks will be available on-site, so plan on making it a day for the entire family!
You can make a difference in Oklahoma
St. John’s Episcopal Church of Havre de Grace has decided to take up a donation of goods and we are going to be sending them to Oklahoma. One of our vestry members, Ken Streb, is a first responder and will be driving a truck out there for us. We are in contact with the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and have been given a list of supplies needed and drop off locations from them. We are looking for first aid supplies, blankets, batteries, pet supplies and food, non-perishable foods, water, work gloves, shovels, tools, rakes, heavy trash sacks, boxes, pitchforks, toiletries… NO CLOTHING. We are also looking for money donations for the TRIP to get the supplies there. We will also be accepting gift cards to Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Lowes. Our deadline for donations will be June 23rd.
