From Harford County Public Schools:
The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) will recognize Aberdeen High School, which serves families of the Aberdeen Proving Ground U.S. Army base, as “NMSI School of the Year” for its outstanding academic performance in the 2012-2013 school year. NMSI will also announce the annual results of its innovative comprehensive program that is focused on serving military families for both Aberdeen High School and Havre de Grace High School during events taking place at 9:00 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., respectively.
The program is increasing the number of students who take and pass rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) math, science, and English exams at these schools. The NMSI Comprehensive AP* program at Aberdeen High School is made possible by a generous grant from The Boeing Company, and the program at Havre de Grace High School is funded by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).
During a ceremony Friday morning at Aberdeen High School, the school will be recognized as the second-annual NMSI “School of the Year,” out of 465 participating schools nationwide. Participating in the Aberdeen High School event are Dr. Patricia Falcone, Associate Director for National Security and International Affairs at The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Col. Rich Morales (U.S. Army), Executive Director, White House Joining Forces Initiative; Barbara P. Canavan, Superintendent, Harford County Public Schools; Mike O’Brien, Principal, Aberdeen High School; Gregg Fleisher, Chief Academic Officer, NMSI; and Aberdeen High School teachers, students and parents.
On Friday afternoon at Havre de Grace High School, the school will recognize the exceptional student achievement that has resulted from the partnership between DoDEA and NMSI. Participating in the Havre de Grace High School event are Barbara P. Canavan; James Reynolds, Principal, Havre de Grace High School; Mort Orlov, NMSI; and Havre de Grace High School teachers, students and parents.
National Math and Science Initiative, a non-profit organization, was launched in 2007 by top leaders in business, education, and science to transform education in the United States. NMSI has received national recognition for training 3-12 teachers and improving student performance through the rapid expansion of these highly successful programs: NMSI’s Comprehensive AP program, NMSI Teacher Training program, and UT Austin’s UTeach program. Inaugural funding for NMSI, was provided by the Exxon Mobil Corporation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. For more information, visit www.nms.org.

Doesn’t anyone else think it’s strange that the company that is paying the students and teachers for these passing AP grades is the same one that’s giving the award?
Cdev says
Not really it is a non-profit not a company and second they selected from the schools that participate in the program.
