From the office of U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski:
MIKULSKI STATEMENT ON OBAMA DRAFT PLAN TO ALLOW EAST COAST DRILLING
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) today issued the following statement on the Department of Interior’s 2017-2022 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Draft Proposed Program, which would allow offshore drilling off the Atlantic Coast. Senator Mikulski, along with several colleagues, wrote a letter in August to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell asking her to protect the East Coast from offshore oil and gas drilling.
“I am absolutely opposed to offshore drilling and always will be,” Senator Mikulski said. “While I am pleased that Maryland was not included in the Department of Interior’s plan, I am concerned that our neighboring states were. As we saw after the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, when oil starts to leak it knows no boundaries. Drilling off the coast of Virginia and other states along the Eastern Seaboard could pose great risks to the coastal economy of Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay. Offshore drilling can devastate the environment, harming our unique and fragile coastline and wreaking havoc on the coastal communities whose economies rely heavily on tourism. I will keep fighting to protect Maryland’s beaches, precious waterways and tourism economy.”

“I am absolutely opposed to offshore drilling and always will be.” Like most, I am concerned about offshore drilling. But Senator, I recently read that a house burned down and damaged the adjoining house. We don’t always just say stop building houses. We find ways to make them less fire prone. And, at the same time we improve damage control. We can develop and enforce ways to do that with offshore wells. We can always improve the way things are.
Practical Guy says
Of course, I think oil wells and wind farms are damn ugly and we need to address that also.
Common Sense says
Where do you think all that North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska and California oil comes from?
We have been drilling offshore in the US since 1896.

If you had to buy your own gas you’d sing a different song. Must be nice living on the tax payers money.

Hey Barb, Lets stop all offshore drilling, fracking and become more depended on the middle east and raise a gallon of gas back up to $4.00. Time for you to retire and go back to Fells Point and grab a seat at the Cat’s Eye and tell everyone their how great you are.

Senator please STFU!!
JSW says
Senator,
Who cares what you’re opposed to? How about what the people you serve want? Remember that, often overlooked and forgotten by legislator that have been in office way too long like you, you do the will of the people.
my party left me and the other one is worse says
Ms Mikulski,
I am absolutely opposed to anything you say or do. You are the prime example of why we need a Constitutional Amendment mandating Term Limits for all elected Federal Government tyrants.

I don’t know that I am totally in agreement with this offshore drilling. However, the gulf disaster was basically because man did not do something right in repairs.
I think the president should change his mind about the pipeline from Canada to Nebraska. The pipe lines thru Harford County have never created a problem. The original installation is temporary jobs but what other construction project isn’t temporary jobs. The current pipeline being installed from Upper Cross Roads to Owings Mills is a temporary job situation just as the construction of Youths Benefit Schoo.
