Lightning from a strong storm which rolled through Harford County on Monday night was blamed for a fire which caused serious damage to a Forest Hill home, as well as a string of incidents in the immediate area.
According to a release from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the fire was reported at approximately 10:47 p.m. in the 1200 block of Bonaire Road in Forest Hill when a teenager house-sitting for his grandparents observed smoke coming from the ceiling of the home. Fire crews were already present on the same block, handling a lightning strike incident which occurred at approximately the same time, and were alerted to the house fire by a neighbor.
In all, approximately 50 firefighters from the Jarrettsville, Bel Air, Fallston, Whiteford, and Hereford volunteer fire companies responded and brought the blaze under control in about an hour. Damage to the home was estimated at $75,000, while damages to its contents were estimated at $30,000, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Bonaire Road fire was one in a string of incidents connected to the severe storms passing through the area. Fire crews also responded to a garage fire on Steeplechase Drive and Lady Anne Court, according to the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association. In all, the association reported nine “incidents of interest” in connection with the storm.
