From Harford Community College:
Peter Franchot, Comptroller of Maryland, met with Dr. Dianna Phillips, President of Harford Community College, on September 15 for a tour of the College’s Edgewood Hall. The two-story, 34,000 square foot building is undergoing a comprehensive renovation that will include two additions totaling 6,500 square feet.
The meeting provided a unique opportunity for the Comptroller to learn more about the important work conducted by Harford Community College. In addition to expressing how impressed he was with the Edgewood Hall renovations, Mr. Franchot and Dr. Phillips discussed the importance of serving military veterans in their pursuit of higher education. Harford Community College was designated a Top School by Military Advanced Education & Transition (MAE&T) in its 2016 MAE&T Guide to Colleges & Universities, measuring best practices in military and veteran education.
The Edgewood Hall addition provides the College with much-needed multipurpose rooms, office space, and storage. To meet workforce development needs, one of the multipurpose rooms is being outfitted with equipment to support a food science lab. With the exception of that lab, everything in the new areas will be movable, so the style and type of educational classroom can be radically changed daily to meet the needs of individuals and businesses throughout the county and region.
The project is being funded by the State of Maryland and Harford County with a construction budget of $8,636,000. The project is scheduled for completion in December and will open to students for the spring 2017 semester.
Along with the Governor and the Treasurer, the Comptroller serves on the Board of Public Works. The Board controls procurement by most state agencies (including the direct review and approval of most State contracts exceeding $200,000); adopts regulations (COMAR Title 21); sets procurement policy; and establishes internal operational procedures.
