BEL AIR, Md.—Freshman Sarah Spalt (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) put up a triple-double and was just three steals away from a quadruple-double as she scored 28 points to lead the Harford women’s basketball team in its 79-60 rout of Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna Center. The Fighting Owls (2-7) closed out the month and the calendar year with their second win, while the Colonials dropped to 7-4 on the season.

Spalt was quiet in the first half, tallying just five points on 1-for-2 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 from the line, but exploded for 23 points on 10-for-11 shooting, 2-for-3 from the line in the second half. On the day, the guard tallied 28 points on 11-for-13 shooting, 5-for-7 from the free throw line with one 3-pointer, 12 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals as she played every minute of the game.
Freshman Kiara Reeves (Aberdeen, Md./C. Milton Wright) came just two boards away from a double-double, with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, 5-for-6 from the line and eight rebounds.

Alicia Wilson led the Colonials, recording 26 points, eight rebounds, eight steals, and four assists as she shot 9-for-17 from the field and 8-for-9 from the charity stripe.

The Colonials took control early, building a 7-0 lead over the Owls three minutes into the first half, but a 7-0 run by Harford which saw a trey from freshman Brittany Mears (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) and fast break layups from Mears and Reeves knotted the score at seven with 15:30 to go.

Harford would take its first lead of the game, 11-9, at the 14:00 mark thanks to two buckets by sophomore Marie Fox (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) and would build the lead to seven points, 23-16 with just under nine minutes to play, but Philadelphia answered with eight straight points over the next 1:45 to take a 24-23 advantage with 7:15 left in the half.

The Colonials would hold the lead for the next four minutes, building it to as many as three, but the Owls slowly chipped away and knotted the score for the fourth time in the half, 27-27 at the 3:15 mark but a fast break layup by Mears and the ensuing make on the and-one free throw put Harford up, 30-27 and one made free throw each by freshman Natasha Bond (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Mears put the Owls up, 32-37 with 55 seconds left.

A Colonial free throw cut the lead to four, but two more free throws, one each from Spalt and Reeves gave the Owls a 34-28 lead going into the half.

Harford wasted no time in the second half, building its lead to eight points thanks to a fast-break layup from Spalt to take a 36-28 lead at 19:51.

Philadelphia would battle back to put itself within two on three different occasions over the course of the first eight and a half minutes, but, after a three by Mears made it 50-45 at the 11:02 mark, would come no closer than three points, 50-47 with 10:39 to go.

The Owls would build that lead to seven points thanks to made free throw by Reeves and layup by Spalt and after some seesaw scoring would see themselves up eight.

Philadelphia answered with what would be its last threatening run as the Colonials trimmed the lead to four, 58-54 with 7:45 left.

Harford dominated the next 5:15, outscoring Philadelphia, 19-4, over that span to take a 77-58 lead with 2:30 left. Spalt accounted for 12 of those 19 points with five layups, four of them on the fast break and two free throws, one of them an and-one to complete a three-point play.

The Colonials would score just once more on a layup by Justine Pearson to make the score 77-60 before freshman Sarah Miller (White Hall, Md./Red Lion Christian) tacked on the final free throws to give Harford the 79-60 win.

The Fighting Owls return to action in 2009 as they travel to Cecil on Jan. 3 for a 4:30 p.m. game and to Frederick on Jan. 6 for a 7:00 p.m. contest before returning home on Jan. 8 as they host Cumberland in a 6:00 p.m. matchup.

BEL AIR, Md.—Three players have signed National Letters of Intent to play volleyball at Harford for the 2009 season, head coach Jason Colangelo announced today. Kaitlyn Hall, Jaclyn Hall and Rebecca Wysocki signed with the Fighting Owls during a formal ceremony on Tuesday night at Susquehanna Center.

“All three of these players have tremendous leadership skills and will make an immediate impact at Harford,” Colangelo said. “They are very consistent players and exhibit some great teamwork together, especially with them all coming from the same high school. They are the kind of players that improve themselves while also helping to improve the players around them and in turn make the team that much better.”

Jaclyn Hall, a 5′9″ outside hitter from Bel Air, Md., averaged 1.96 kills per game during Bel Air High School’s regular season as well as contributing 0.51 aces per game. Hall spent her first two years with the Bobcats as a setter on the jayvee squad, but was elevated to varsity at the start of her junior year where she changed her position to outside hitter. The senior tallied a season-high 15 kills and also added four aces in Bel Air’s win over Elkton and was also a member of the basketball and lacrosse teams during her tenure at Bel Air.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to have Jaclyn play at Harford and optimistic that she will be a strong player for us,” Colangelo said. Her well roundedness and ability to play multiple positions will greatly strengthen our lineup next year.”

Hall’s sister, Kaitlyn, a 5′6″ defensive specialist and right-side hitter will also join her on the Harford team and averaged just shy of 1.00 dig per game for the 2008 season. Like her sister, she spent two years on the jayvee team before playing at the varsity level her final two years and was also a member of the basketball and lacrosse teams.

“Kaitlyn’s defensive skills and her ability to read the other team’s offense will give her the ability to be a strong passer and her consistent serving will allow her to contribute to the team’s overall offense,” the coach said.

The third and final piece of Colangelo’s recruiting class is 5′8″ middle hitter Rebecca Wysocki, who spent two years at Redeemer Classical before coming to Bel Air for her junior and senior years, where she was a member of the varsity Bobcat team and was named First-Team All-County this past fall by The Baltimore Sun. Wysocki is also a Minds in Motion scholar as is a member of the TCA club volleyball team based in Baltimore.

“Rebecca is a strong outside hitter with the ability to be consistent blocker for us next year,” Colangelo said. “Her smart net play is going to be an asset for us next year.”

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball team evened its home record to 4-4 as it edged out Patrick Henry, 79-74, in the first-ever televised game at Susquehanna Center on Saturday night.

The Fighting Owls (5-7) played a doubleheader with the women’s team that was taped by the local Harford Cable Network and is to be aired in early January.

The Owls did not disappoint in the first TV game in the history of the school, playing the Patriots (9-4) to a 79-74 nail-biter which saw clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by Harford. The Owls took a 70-69 lead with under three minutes to play and built it up to a seven-point, 79-72, lead as they connected on 9 of 10 shots on five trips to the charity stripe.

Freshman Butch Faulcon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) continued his extraordinary play as of late, tallying his third straight double-double with 20 points and 15 boards, while contributing 10 of the Owls’ 28 total free throws, on 12 attempts. The forward also dished out four assists, swiped four balls from the Patriots, and blocked one shot in his fourth straight game with 20 points or more.

Freshman Troy Burgan (Akron, Ohio/North) added a career-high 26 points on 9-for-14 shooting, while also shooting 8-for-12 from the line and tallying three assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Marvin Jackson led Patrick Henry, recording 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including 4-for-5 from the line, and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out of the game at the 1:50 mark.

The Owls jumped on the board first in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead off a free throw by freshman Jesse Volk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and after three ties, the last at eight points with just under 16:00 left, took a four-point lead, 12-8, their largest of the first half.

The Patriots battled back to tie two more times before taking sole possession of the lead on a 3-pointer from Anthony Wootten that made the score 17-14 at the 12:21 mark.

Patrick Henry would extend that advantage to eight, 26-18, with 9:50 to go as they completed a 12-4 run over about four minutes, but Harford answered with a 10-2 run and knotted the score for the sixth time, this time at 28 points apiece with just over 7:00 left.

Two more Patriot possessions saw Patrick Henry take a 32-28 lead, but a thunderous dunk on the fast break from Burgan silenced the rowdy Patriot fans and after Faulcon drew the foul and buried his free throws on the next Owl possession, the teams were tied once again, 32-32 with 5:45 left to play.

A 9-0 run by the Patriots, however, put them up 41-32 and the Owls could only manage to cut that lead to seven, 44-37 going into halftime.

After just one minute had elapsed in the second half, Harford saw itself down 13, 50-37, but a 15-4 run over the next four and half minutes put the Owls within two, 54-52, with 14:30 to go, and another three minutes of play completed a 21-8 run and tied things up, 58-58 at 11:21.

Harford wouldn’t take the lead for another three minutes, however, as the Patriots built a five-point lead, 63-58, with 9:30 left. The Owls answered with six unanswered points to take their first lead, 64-63 with 8:05 left, since leading 14-12 with 13:53 in the first half.

The accomplishment was short-lived, though, as the lead changed hands four times in the next four minutes, with the Owls taking sole possession, 68-67 with 4:12 to play. Harford tacked on some much needed cushion thanks to Burgan’s second fast break dunk of the day to open up a three-point lead on the Patriots.

James Robertson took a feed from Marlin Cribbs and tallied the layup at the 2:55 mark, which put Patrick Henry within one, but the clutch free-throw shooting took over for the Owls as Volk notched two freebies to put Harford up, 72-69, with 2:36 to go and another made free throw by freshman Kartrell Claiborne (Prince George, Va./Prince George) made it a two-possession game, 73-69, at the 1:54 mark.

Faulcon tallied his final two points of the day thanks to the free throws that followed the fifth and disqualifying foul for Jackson to put Harford up, 75-69, with 1:50 left.

A long shot from behind the arc by Robertson cut that lead in half, but freshman Jasper Holleman (Richmond, Va./Matoaca) connected on all four tries in his final two trips to the line to give the Owls a 79-72 lead with just nine seconds left, before Josh McGill tipped in a last minute shot to give Harford the 79-74 victory.

The Fighting Owls return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 17 when they host Delaware Tech for a 7:00 p.m. contest, before closing out the year with a game on Saturday, Dec. 20 against the jayvee squad from St. Mary’s at 3:00 p.m.

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s basketball team scored a season-low 30 points and combined for a season-low 76 total points, as it fell, 46-30, to Baltimore City on Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna Center.

The loss is the second straight for the Fighting Owls (1-7), and the lowest total offensive output since managing just 33 points in their season-opening 85-33 setback.

The Panthers (6-2) did not fare much better, as both teams fell below the 30% mark for field goal shooting for the afternoon’s game.

Freshman Brittany Mears (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) was the standout for an otherwise dismal Owls’ effort, tallying 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting including 2-for-4 from behind the arc and grabbing six boards, while Tanika Jeffers led the Panthers with 20 total points and five assists and rebounds each, four of those field goals from long-range.

Harford connected on just 12 of 57 shots for a 21.1% from the floor, while Baltimore City was successful on 15 of 57 attempts for a 26.3% shooting.

The first five minutes of the game saw four ties and two lead changes, but after the Panthers took a 10-8 lead with 13:21 left, they began to widen the gap, extending their lead to as much as 14 points, 24-10, in the first half before taking a nine-point lead, 27-18 into halftime.

After Harford cut that lead to five points, 30-25, just over five minutes into the first half, a trey from Jeffers put Baltimore City up by eight and the next 5:45, neither team would score a point, until the Panthers netted two free throws at 8:23 to extend their lead to 10, 35-25.

Harford would make just two field goals for the remainder of the game and be outscored 11-5 as Baltimore City rolled to the 16-point, 46-30 win.

The Fighting Owls finish out the month of December and the calendar year next Saturday, Dec. 20 when they host Philadelphia at 1:00 p.m.

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball dropped a tough-fought 109-95 contest to Hagerstown on Tuesday night at the Susquehanna Center after leading, 50-47 at halftime.

The Fighting Owls (4-7, 2-3 MDJUCO) held the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference-leading scoring Hawks (10-1, 5-0 MDJUCO) to just 34.6% shooting in the first half, but couldn’t hold off as Hagerstown connected for 62 points in the second stanza in a game that saw 55 total fouls, 33 of them occurring in the second half.

Freshman Butch Faulcon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led Harford with a double-double for the second straight game, totaling 27 points and 15 rebounds on 9-for-18 shooting, 9-for-10 from the line and dishing out four assists. It was Faulcon’s fourth straight game with double-digit points, while freshmen Troy Burgan (Akron, Ohio/North) and Kartrell Claiborne (Prince George, Va./Prince George) tallied their third straight games in double-figures.

Burgan put up 14 points and grabbed eight boards while also handing out seven assists and Claiborne tallied 18 points and seven boards.

Freshman Lionel Perkins (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) also made it into double-digits with 20 points, shooting 3-for-7 from behind the arc as well as four rebounds, while K’yan Andrews and Isaiah Hill posted double-doubles for the Hawks with 24 points and 11 rebounds and 15 points and 13 rebounds, respectively.

After giving up a seven straight points to start the first half, the Owls went on a 10-5 run to come within two of the Hawks, 12-10 at the 15:19 mark. After two consecutive baskets, Hagerstown was up by seven once again, 17-10, but a 10-2 run over the next 2:15 gave Harford its first lead of the game, 20-19 with 12:34 to go.

The Owls tacked on another five points to complete the 15-2 run which saw three assists from freshman Jasper Holleman (Richmond, Va./Mataoca) and treys by Jesse Volk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Perkins and took a 25-19 advantage with 11:30 to play.

After a made and missed free throw by Andrews, Faulcon tacked on a back door layup thanks to a quick pass from Burgan to give the Owls their largest lead of the game, 27-20 with less than 11 minutes left in the half.

The Hawks would battle back with a 6-0 run of their own however, to come within one point of Harford, 27-26 at the 9:43 mark and would take back the lead, 31-29, with 8:45 before Faulcon knotted the score with a layup from Perkins and Claiborne gave Harford a 33-31 lead after he knocked down two free throws.

The Hawks would tie the score once more, but wouldn’t come any closer than one point away as Harford took a 50-47 lead into the half.

Faulcon started the second half scoring off with two makes from the charity stripe to give Harford a five-point lead, 52-47, but Hagerstown slowly whittled away at the lead and took a 58-57 advantage with a dunk from Hill with 17:00 left to play.

The game would see three ties and nine lead changes over the next seven minutes, before the Hawks took control of the contest for good with 10 minutes to go in the second period, 78-77. After a Hawk layup and tip-in from Claiborne put Harford within one point, Hagerstown rattled off a 17-5 run, which saw eight made free throws, over the next 3:04 to take a 13-point lead, 97-84, over the Owls.

After a lay-up by Claiborne cut the Hagerstown lead to 11, 97-86, with six minutes left, the Owls began to struggle from the floor, connecting on just four shots for nine points, while sending the Hawks to the line seven times as they cruised to the 109-95 victory.

The Fighting Owls return to action on Saturday when they host Patrick Henry in a 4:00 p.m. contest that is part of a double-header with the women’s team that will be tape delayed by the local Harford Cable Network.

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball team scored a season-high 103 points as it downed Frederick, 103-95, on Saturday at Susquehanna Center.

Freshman Butch Faulcon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led the Fighting Owls (4-6, 2-2 MDJUCO) with a season-high double-double of 29 points and 15 rebounds, as he shot 10-for-15 from the floor, 9-for-11 from the line and also dished out four assists. Freshman Jasper Holleman (Richmond, Va./Mataoca) was just short of a double-double as well as he put up 22 points and tallied eight assists and Kartrell Claiborne posted his second double-double of the season, totaling 10 points and 11 rebounds, with seven of those points coming during the last 7:00 of the game.

Freshman Troy Burgan was the only other Owl player with double-digit points as he shot 5-for-6 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe for a total of 17 points, while Nate Frazier led the Cougars (4-6, 3-2 MDJUCO) with 27 points, shooting 11-for-18 from the field.

Frederick took the early, 8-4, lead but a 7-0 lead by Harford over the next 45 seconds put the Owls up 11-8 with 17:01 remaining. Harford would build the lead to 10, 30-20 at the 9:35 mark, but the Cougars battled back with a 16-5 run over the next two minutes to take a brief, 36-35 with 6:35 left in the half.

A layup from freshman Jesse Volk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) gave Harford the 37-36 lead and the Owls would bring their advantage up to nine points, 47-38 with 4:00 left, but Frederick chipped away once again, to take a six-point deficit into halftime, 52-46.

The Owls held a slight advantage over Frederick for the majority of the second half, extending their lead to nine points early in the period, 57-48, with just over 17 minutes left.

The Cougars continued to battle back, however, and came within just two points on five different occasions before knotting the score at 81 points and again at 83 points, with less than seven minutes to play.

After a 7-2 run by Harford in just over a minute and a half, the Owls lead by five, 90-85, with 4:43 to go and the Cougars would come no closer than three points for the remainder of the game as Harford cruised to the 103-95 win.

The Fighting Owls return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 9 when they host offensive league-leading Hagerstown, who are averaging over 100 points per game, at 7:00 p.m.

BEL AIR, Md.—The women’s soccer team wrapped up the 2008 season last month, finishing as the runner-up in the Division I Region XX Tournament as they fell to No.1 Anne Arundel in a 0-0 scoreless tie that was decided by penalty kicks, 4-3 in favor of the Pioneers.

The Fighting Owls finished the season with a 9-6-2 record, with both of their ties coming in the regional tournament. Harford earned the No. seed by virtue of its 9-6-0 regular season record, finishing as the runner-up for the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference regular season crown.

Harford also had four MDJUCO All-Conference and four All-Region XX selections in addition to having four players named to the Region XX All-Tournament team.

The Owls faced CCBC-Catonsville in the regional semifinal and played the Cardinals to a 1-1 tie after regulation and two overtime periods, which sent the contest to penalty kicks. Freshman Tiffany Runk (Abingdon, Md./Kenwood), a First-Team All-Conference and All-Region selection, and sophomore Terry Buontempo (Nottingham, Md./Perry Hall), who joined her on the All-Region team with an Honorable Mention nod and was named Second-Team All-Conference, and Krista Fassio (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll), who was named to the All-Tournament team, made their respective PK’s as Harford advanced to the championship thanks to the 3-0 decision.

Buontempo, who was also named to the All-Tournament team, notched the Owls’ only goal of the game as she gathered a pass from Runk and fired from 10 yards out just 15 minutes into the second half, while Catonsville’s Cara Cashen hit a looping shot from 15 yards out to tie the score up at the 77:02 mark.

Sophomore Jessica Stumpf, who picked up All-Region, First-Team All-Conference and All-Tournament honors, (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) made four saves in the contest, while her counterpary, Lacey Bevilacqua totaled 11.

The story was much the same in the championship against Anne Arundel, but this time neither team scored in regulation or overtime, sending the game to PK’s once again.

Runk and sophomore Eliza Burk (Perry Hall, MD./Perry Hall), who rounded out the award winners with All-Region, Second-Team All-Conference and All-Tournament nods, were each successful in their attempts, tying the teams at two goals apiece. The Pioneers took a brief lead as their third shooter notched a goal, but Fassio would even the score as she completed her shot in the fourth position.

It was, however, the fifth and final shot by Anne Arundel that decided the region championship as the Pioneers claimed the title and advanced to the District H game with a 4-3 win on PK’s.

Stumpf totaled four saves for the game, as she notched her ninth shutout of the season, while Amy Baker corralled 10 shots.

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball team took a 41-38 lead into half, but was outscored 50-38 in the second half as it fell, 88-79, in a heartbreaker to Howard on Wednesday night at Susquehanna Center.

The Fighting Owls (3-6, 1-2 MDJUCO) extended their losing skid to three straight games with the loss to the Dragons (3-6, 1-2 MDJUCO).

Freshman Butch Faulcon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led the way for the Owls in what was an extremely physical game, tallying 21 points and grabbing seven board while shooting 8-for-10 from the floor. Freshman Lionel Perkins (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was the only other Harford player in double-digits, as he totaled 13 points and five rebounds and freshman Jasper Holleman (Richmond, Va./Matoaca) dished out seven assists on the night.

Jimmy Dorsey led the way for the Dragons with a triple-double of 21 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while also adding six steals and shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the line.

Harford got off to a rough start in the first half as Howard built a 19-10 lead with 12:27 left, but a 13-0 run over the next 3:02 gave the Owls put the Owls up 23-19 with 9:17 to go in the half. Freshman Jesse Volk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) drained a long trey and a jumper from freshman Chris Pappas (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and two free throws from Faulcon put Harford within two, 19-17 before Holleman’s layup knotted the score. A beautiful reverse layup by Faulcon gave the Owls their first lead of the game and another jumper from the Virginia native gave Harford a four-point lead.

The Owls would extend that lead to seven points on two occasions before the half was over, but a three from Dorsey with 45 seconds to go would put the Dragons within one, 39-38 and it was a buzzer beating layup by freshman Troy Burgan (Akron, Ohio/North) that gave Harford a three-point cushion going into halftime.

The second half saw both teams trade points for a little over five minutes, before Tobias Eakins capitalized on an Owl turnover and Deantre Washington added a jumper less than 30 seconds later to knot the score at 50. Greg Fisher added another bucket and Howard took a 52-50 lead at the 12:55 mark, the last lead change of the game. After yet another Harford turnover and ensuing Howard fast break followed by a final jumper, the Owls saw themselves down six points and on the wrong end of a 10-0 run.

Howard would build that lead to 14 points, 73-59 with 5:00 left to play but a 17-4 run over the next four minutes, which saw three 3-pointers from freshman Kevin Mead (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) put the Owls within one, 77-76 with 1:27 to go.

Dorsey notched two free throws for the Dragons to take a 79-76 lead and a Holleman turnover on Harford’s possession gave Howard a fresh 35-second shot clock with 1:02 left.

A Faulcon foul made it a two-possession game as Anthony Jones knocked down both foul shots to give Howard the 81-76 advantage and one made and one missed free throw by freshman Kartrell Claiborne (Prince George, Va./Prince George) only trimmed the lead to four points.

Claiborne tacked on a layup with 27 seconds left to put the Owls within three, but Howard made all of their next four foul shots on two Harford fouls and added a last second layup as they took the 88-79 victory.

The Fighting Owls return to action on Saturday when they host Frederick for a 2:00 p.m. contest at the Susquehanna Center.
