An Acidic Snap: The Pleasantries Of Praxis Sauvignon Blanc
It’s time for another wine review, and this time two things have changed: 1.) it’s a white instead of a red and 2.) I tasted it with three other people. This time around I took on Praxis Cellars Sauvignon Blanc and of course it is compliments of Wine World in Abingdon.
When I took my first whiff of this one I breathed a deep sigh of satisfaction because a nice aroma of apple and citrus flooded my nostrils. These are the kind of smells I have come to adore from Sauvignon Blancs, which happen to be my favorite white varietal. Next came the tasting. As each person around the table took the first sip, words of praise rang out from two in the bunch. “Oh, I really like it,” said one. “It’s not as dry of a finish for this type of wine,” said another.

Why? Why? Why?
May 1, 2008 at 2:35 pmCould we see more fast food restaurants in Harford County…
…because New Jersey is considering imposing a “sin Tax” on fast food. Could this serve as motivation for those Ft. Monmouth employees who are on the fence about relocating to our area? If so, the increased demand may finally land us our first Sonic!!!
From the article:
Still, some say taxing fast food isn’t such a bad idea.
“I think this country has gone too much in the direction of fast and unhealthy food, and if people are taxed they may terminate that and turn toward more healthy foods,” said West Orange resident Maureen Felix.

This article marks the first of many to come. Prepare yourself, because my long dreamed about fantasy has become a reality: writing wine reviews. With the assistance of Wine World in Abingdon, I will be bringing you my opinions on wines from around the world. And as every first article needs a starting point, I have mine: Bodegas Alma Negra, which is a red blend of malbec and bonarda from the Mendoza region in Argentina.
At first smell, the wine gives off an oaky and deep cherry aroma. Being a person who seldom enjoys heavy oaks in my wine, I became a bit skeptical. But once the first sip entered my mouth and danced around my taste buds, my eyebrows perked up and a smile quickly took shape. This is an exceptional wine. The oaky and heavy cherry aromas trick you into thinking this will be a strong drink to be wrestled with, but the taste speaks a different language. The oak serves as a backdrop to the luscious cherry flavor and the wine tastes surprisingly light.

The Chew Review: Mamie’s Cafe - With Love
There is a new restaurant in Aberdeen causing a stir (no, not that one, this one is actually open) , although at first glance, you may have been a bit confused by it’s name. At least, that’s how I felt after seeing the sign for “Mamie’s Cafe - With Love” in the Beards Hill Plaza a few months ago. I stopped by one day while grocery shopping at Klein’s to peek in the windows, and after seeing it’s antiqued, shabby chic decor, decided it was a place I would never step foot in.
At least, until I started hearing more about it. First, there was the post on the Dining@Large blog on the Baltimore Sun’s website that listed Mamie’s as having one of the top ten burgers in the Baltimore area. Next, after posting the burger news on The Dagger’s forum, great reviews started pouring in from stacey, Dave, and The Dagger’s own Matt about how good the food was. Finally, a quick google search revealed that Mamie’s used to be in Hampden, and won the praise from many critics, including the City Paper. That was enough for me, and it was time to drop the kids off at the in-laws and check this place out.

Potent Potables: Stop Whining, Start Wining
Have you ever gone to a liquor store searching for a nice bottle of wine, but instead found only a disgusted stare from the clerk when you had no clue what you were looking for?
Some time ago, I did. But after delving into the wonderful world of wine, I found out that simply asking for wine could end with you getting a bottle of just about anything. That is why I would propose that everyone learn some wine basics. This way, the next time you get back to that same liquor store, you can politely let the clerk know you won’t be needing their help anymore. Hint: this drives real wine nerds crazy.
Varietals
Your common wine novice is often heard ordering their wine merely by the color; red or white. And in some cases they are aware of a Rosé. Contrary to popular belief, not all reds and whites are the same. Now that you are an adult, you should be able to pick your grown-up drink by its proper classification and not the way you picked juice when you were a child. “I want the blue juice,” is what I remember saying when I was young.
