Nominations Sought for 2010 Harford Historic Preservation Awards

(Bel Air, MD)– The Harford County Department of Planning and Zoning, in conjunction with the Harford County Historic Preservation Commission, is seeking nominations for the 2010 Historic Preservation Awards. As part of this year’s annual celebration, the Harford County Historic Preservation Commission will present Preservation Awards to individuals and organizations whose contributions demonstrate outstanding achievements in historic preservation within Harford County.

Awards will be presented in May in recognition of National Historic Preservation Month. Nominations and awards may be made in three categories: Preservation Project Award, Preservationist Honor Award, and Special Preservation Award.

Nominations may come from the community, individuals, and organizations, or the Commission itself. The Commission is particularly interested in recognizing projects that have demonstrated that historic preservation can be a viable strategy in renewing life in older neighborhoods, projects that can protect the County’s historic and scenic rural landscapes, and individuals whose work and vision have ...Continue Reading

Harford Nets Hundreds of State and National Scholars; HCPS Students Earn Recognition for Achievements

The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) recently announced the finalists for the 2009-10 Maryland Distinguished Scholar Award, which include three students from Harford County Public Schools (HCPS).

The finalists from HCPS are Alex Hutcheson, senior at C. Milton Wright High School; Drew Thatcher, senior at C. Milton Wright High School; and Jacob Silverman, senior at Patterson Mill High School. Both Mr. Hutcheson and Mr. Thatcher were recognized for the achievement category, while Mr. Silverman earned his award in the talent category for instrumental music.

Furthermore, 17 Harford students were selected as semi-finalists this year for the Distinguished Scholar award in the achievement category, three were named semi-finalists in the talent category and 201 students and 22 students earned an honorable mention for the achievement and talent categories, respectively.

2009 Harford Awards Presented: 5 Local Firms Recognized

(Bel Air, MD) – - The 18th annual Harford Award Program was held Wednesday, September 23 at the Richlin Ballroom. Over 385 business and community leaders attended the dinner event that recognized five Harford County firms for their outstanding contributions to the community, the economy and their employees. Since its inception, the event has honored over 82 companies including these honorees. This year’s theme was “Building Bridges…Continuing our Legacy.”

This year’s winners were: Chesapeake Environmental Management, Inc., Churchville Veterinary Clinic, Inc., Comer Construction, Inc., Harford Habitat for Humanity, Inc. and McComas Funeral Home, Inc. Each organization represents the best in each of the following respective business categories: Technology, Retail, Industrial, Non-profit and Service.

Sen. Glassman Receives Legislator Of The Year Award From State Firemen

Ocean City, MD – Northern Harford County State Senator Barry Glassman (R-35) received the Senator William H. Amoss Memorial Legislative Award Tuesday at the Maryland State Firemen’s 117th Annual Convention in Ocean City. Senator Glassman, who thought he was presenting citations at the morning session, was surprised as he was introduced to the convention.

The Legislator of the Year Award recognizes an individual’s contributions and determination in promoting the betterment of Maryland Fire and Rescue and Emergency Services through successful legislation and the legislative process.

During his introduction by MSFA President Frank Underwood, Senator Glassman was commended for his leadership in defeating two proposals to privatize and dismantle Maryland’s medivac and trauma system. County Exec Craig Honored as Silver Beaver by Boy Scouts

(Bel Air, MD – February 4, 2009) – - Harford County Executive David R. Craig has been honored by the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America with the Silver Beaver Award during a National Court of Honor at Martin’s West in Baltimore. Craig was one of 16 selected to receive this prestigious award.

Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is presented for distinguished service to young people within a BSA local council. More than 50,000 recognitions have been conferred to date. The recipient must be a registered adult member of the BSA.

Those who receive the Silver Beaver Award are recognized for their distinguished service to youth and the wide range of their professional and civic responsibilities which have fulfilled Scouting’s aim of providing responsible, mature adults as good models for youth.

Delegate Wayne Norman’s Firm Honored by Disabilities Commission

The Law Offices of H. Wayne Norman, Jr., has received the Employer Award of Merit from the Harford County Commission on Disabilities.

At a reception at the Maryland Golf and Country Club in Bel Air, Maryland Delegate Wayne Norman (District 35A) accepted the award on behalf of his law firm. The Law Offices of H. Wayne Norman, Jr., was honored for “recognizing opportunities provided to individuals with disabilities.”

Also honored at the event was Ms. Lauren Kennedy, a legal assistant at Delegate Norman’s law firm. Ms. Kennedy of Bel Air was recognized for, and presented with an , “Award of Merit for Employment.”

The Law Offices of H. Wayne Norman, Jr., has hired students from the Arc Northern Chesapeake Region, and also acts as mentor for local High School and area law school students.

Harford County Government Receives Budget Award

(Bel Air, MD – November 18, 2008) – - The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has announced that Harford County Government has received the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget. The award represents significant achievement by Harford County in meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

To receive the award, Harford County Government had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The established guidelines are designed to assess how well the budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operational guide and communication tool.

In order to qualify for the award, the county’s budget documents were rated proficient in each category.

A Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation was awarded by the GFOA to the Harford County Office of Budget and Management Research for their work in preparing the county budget documents.
