BEL AIR, Md.—Sophomores John Schwarz (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall/Mount St. Mary’s) and Jamar Cooper (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg) and freshman JoJo Woodruff (Capitol Heights, Md./Wise), who were named to the MDJUCO All-Conference teams last week, have been named to the Region XX All-Region teams, the region announced today. Freshman Denard Dickens (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) was also named to the Region XX All-Tournament Team for his performances as Harford wrapped up the 2010 season in the Region XX quarterfinal and semifinal games.
Schwarz, who was named First-Team All-Region, led Harford in the regular season as he averaged 14.2 points per game, was second on the team with 8.1 rebounds per game and third with a .503 field goal percentage. BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball team’s season came to an end on Saturday as it fell to No. 1 Cecil, 92-77, in the Region XX semifinal game at Hagerstown Community College. The No. 4 Fighting Owls (16-9) advanced to the semifinal with a 99-82 win over No. 5 CCBC-Essex in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup but couldn’t best the Seahawks (22-3).
Harford’s chances looked good going into the semifinal game as the Owls battled Cecil to a 100-99 overtime decision, in the Seahawks favor, during the teams’ regular-season meeting on Jan. 16 and the Owls were also coming off a dominant win over Essex after falling to the Knights just one week earlier in the MDJUCO opening round.

Sophomore John Schwarz (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall/Mount St. Mary’s) leads Harford’s honorees with a First-Team All-Conference selection, while sophomore Jamar Cooper (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg) and freshman JoJo Woodruff (Capitol Heights, Md./Wise) picked up Second-Team honors.
Schwarz led Harford in the regular season as he averaged 14.2 points per game, was second on the team with 8.1 rebounds per game and third with a .503 field goal percentage. Cooper led the conference with 3.8 steals per game and also ranked in the top five with 6.0 assists per game while ranking third on the team with 12.5 points per game. Woodruff finished the regular season as the second scorer on the team with 13.3 points per game and shot just under .700 from the free-throw line.
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball team will meet CCBC-Essex for the third time this season when the No. 4 Fighting Owls (15-8) face the No. 5 Knights (14-12) at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in the opening round of the NJCAA Division-II Region XX Tournament at Hagerstown Community College.
The teams’ most recent meeting was last Tuesday, Feb. 16 when Essex ousted Harford from the MDJUCO Tournament with an 86-80 win over the Owls at the Susquehanna Center. Harford, the No. 6 seed, led by as much as 16 points in that game, 41-25, but remained scoreless while allowing the No. 11 Knights to score 15 points over the final 4:45 in the upset win.
Essex fell in its quarterfinal game, 90-80, to No. 3 Hagerstown, but will not see the Hawks this weekend as host Hagerstown is a Division-I competitor.
BEL AIR, Md.—For the second year in a row, the Harford women’s basketball team will participate in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative to assist in raising breast cancer awareness. Harford’s designated Pink Zone day will be part of the men’s and women’s doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 6 against Philadelphia (W-12:00 p.m.) and CCBC-Catonsville (M-2:00 p.m.). The twinbill will also be the last home game for nine Fighting Owl sophomores.
Harford has partnered with Upper Chesapeake Cancer LifeNet, a non-profit organization that services the Harford and lower Cecil counties, which is located on the campus of the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. The organization serves to provide assistance to individuals and families who are current or recent patients and are in partnership with the American Cancer Society, Chesapeake Cancer Alliance and the Upper Chesapeake Foundation.
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s and women’s basketball teams combined for a 91-point margin of victory as they rolled over visiting Valley Forge Military on Monday night at the Susquehanna Center.
The Fighting Owls women (6-14) bested the Trojans (2-10) by 30 points, 73-43, while the Fighting Owls men (13-7) scored a season-high 132 points in a 132-71 victory over the Trojans (1-10).
Freshman JoJo Woodruff (Capitol Heights, Md./Wise) tallied his second straight 20+ point game with 21 on the night, while also dishing out eight assists.
Harford struggled at the start, with Valley Forge leading, 18-16 with 13:12 left in the first before a 13-0 Harford run gave the Owls a lead they would maintain until the final buzzer. COLUMBIA, Md.—Since the New Year, the Harford men’s basketball team has been on a rollercoaster ride through the MDJUCO Conference standings. The Fighting Owls (12-7, 6-5 MDJUCO) started January off with a win against second-place Allegany, to enter into a tie for second in the standings, and have since seen themselves in ties for fifth, eight and seventh place. Harford’s 91-88 win over Howard on Wednesday night put the Owls into a three-way tie for seventh place with the end of the season rapidly approaching. The Fighting Owls women (5-14, 2-8 MDJUCO) did not fare as well, falling to the Dragons (5-9, 2-6 MDJUCO), 76-51.

BEL AIR, Md.—Five players scored 20+ points during the Harford men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader against the College of Southern Maryland on Saturday as the women Fighting Owls (5-12, 2-7) earned a 57-40 win over the Hawks (1-11, 0-5 MDJUCO) and the men Fighting Owls (11-7, 5-5 MDJUCO) fell to the Hawks (9-8, 6-4 MDJUCO), 104-94.
Freshmen Alanza Brown (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) and Denard Dickens (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) tallied 26 and 21 points, respectively for the Fighting Owls and Ashley Farmer totaled 21 points for the Hawk women, but Rob Shannon and Devin Posey stole the show on Saturday as they posted 44- and 32-point totals in the Hawks’ victory over the Harford men.

BEL AIR, Md.—For the second straight game, a Harford basketball team was on the losing end of an overtime thriller as the Harford women’s basketball team fell to Montgomery College-Rockville, 61-58 on Wednesday night at the Susquehanna Center. The men, fresh off their overtime loss to No. 7 Cecil, struggled at points, but managed an 87-73 win over Rockville during the doubleheader that was recorded for a tape-delayed broadcast by the local Harford Cable Network.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Harford women’s basketball team fell to the jayvee squad from Catholic University for the second time this season, as the Cardinals earned a 69-57 decision over the Fighting Owls (4-11) on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Freshman Alanza Brown (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) led the Owls in the setback with a team, season-high of 23 points, while sophomore Kiara Reeves (Aberdeen, Md./C. Milton Wright) added 14 and sophomore Brittany Mears (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) added 11 points each.
Holly Janicki led the Cardinals with 16 points and Kat Owunna contributed another 14 for Catholic.
The Owls managed just 17 points in a 28-17 first half, but more than doubled their offensive output in the second stanza, totaling 40 points to the Cardinals’ 41 on the way to the 69-57 decision.
