BEL AIR, MD – February 18, 2010 – It’s that time of year again in Downtown Bel Air, MD when everyone in town is anxiously awaiting the return of the annual chocolate events, hosted by the Bel Air Downtown Alliance, at the Bel Air Armory on Friday, March 5th and Saturday, March 6th. (Bel Air, MD) – - Representatives of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China were briefed recently by Director James Richardson of the Office of Economic Development and Karen Holt, from the regional BRAC office, regarding economic development in Harford County. Members of the Chinese delegation included officials from the Guangxi Zhuang region who are responsible for future economic growth in China.
“It was a pleasure hosting the delegation from China and sharing information and ideas regarding economic development and business here in Harford County,” stated Director Richardson. “We hope the information we shared with the officials from Guangxi Zhuang will be of help to them when they return home,” Richardson stated.

The Harford County Environmental Scholarship Program awards a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior from each of Harford County’s ten high schools. As with any scholarship program, community support is a vital part of continued success. The monies for these scholarships are provided through the generosity of local businesses who agree to be a Corporate Sponsor of one or more of the schools. The Corporate Sponsor contributes $1000 to each school it chooses to sponsor. In addition, a countywide scholarship is awarded which is also funded through business contributions of $500, $250, and $100. At this juncture, the Harford County Environmental Scholarship Committee invites organizations to support this local scholarship program by becoming a Corporate Sponsor for one or more of our ten local high schools. Craig accompanied by James Richardson, Director of the Office of Economic Development and members of his staff, kicked off the 2009 Harford County Business Appreciation Week on September 21 at the Armory in the Town of Bel Air. The day began at the Armory in Bel Air where the County Executive presided over the Harford County Office of Tourism annual meeting.
County Executive Craig, accompanied by Mayor Rob Preston spent several hours visiting six local businesses in Bel Air before heading to the northwestern part of the county to honor an additional eight businesses.

The recession has begun to be felt among Harford businesses, as several companies have closed or announced closings recently. Local, regional, and national companies have all suffered, with a growing list determining that they will no longer be conducting business. Some have been bought out, but most are simply leaving vacant storefront.
Among those being bought ought are Hecht’s (now Macy’s) and Klein’s. The Klein’s in the town of Bel Air, much like the stores in Aberdeen and Whiteford, has already changed the storefront sign to read “ShopRite,” and the Klein’s name is no longer on the receipts. The machines and merchandise have likewise changed. The branch in the Festival at Bel Air has posters announcing the coming changes.
