Advanced Placement Exams are developed by The College Board and offered to high school students nationwide in subjects ranging from English Literature to Calculus to Art History. Results from the AP Exams let students know if they are ready for college-level work and provide the rest of us with one of the few available measurements of student achievement based on national standards.

Given that over 65% of the nation’s high school graduates have headed right to college in recent years, AP results matter – not just to individual students, but to anyone who cares about the quality of public education.

In response to a request from The Dagger, Harford County Public Schools has released detailed AP results for the 2008-09 school year. The report includes many bright spots. But the results also serve as a sobering reminder that the celebrated passing rates on the Maryland High School Assessment do ...Continue Reading

Sleight Of Hand And Misdirection In Measuring Advanced Placement Exam Performance

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

Executive Director of Secondary Education David A. Volrath gave an update on high school reform at a recent Board of Education meeting and it was a whopper in more ways than one. The sixty-page, chart-laden report was handed to the Board just prior to the meeting rather than the Friday before as is standard practice. Unusual, especially given the size, the import and the level of public interest in the reforms also known as CSSRP.

Armchair Coach: Lessons From Week 2 In The NFL

Filed as Balls with no comments

by Adam

The big news to start with from football this week has to be Maryland’s big win against Cal. The Terps may have put on the most complete performance I have ever seen from them. The Defensive line had not been in the backfield so much since Shawn Merriman left for the NFL. Kevin Barnes is looking like the next Maryland DB to have a future in the NFL; he has shown the ability to make the big interceptions and the big hit. He hit Heisman trophy candidate Jahvid Best so hard he threw up on the field. Chris “Big Game” Turner played an unbelievable game; now only if he could play halfway decent against the non-ranked teams.

Outgoing Republican Congressman Wayne Gilchrest (District 1) threw his support behind Barack Obama for president this week, saying that the Obama-Biden ticket will do more to rebuild America’s image abroad. A moderate Republican from the Eastern shore, Gilchrest lost to State Sen. Andy Harris in the primary. Gilchrest’s support of Obama follows his recent endorsement of another Democrat, Frank Kratovil, who is running against Harris for the District 1 seat.

The pair will appear in a forum at Harford Community College tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., and will square off in a debate Sept. 30 at Salisbury University.

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

Enter Rock’n’Register, a six-band extravaganza scheduled for Saturday, September 13, at Harford Community College’s Susquehanna Gymnasium.
