It is without question that I wish to serve my community. Since my initial beginnings of developing an afterschool program in Edgewood, MD at Anthony’s Barbershop, I have collaborated and donated personal time and financial resources to non-profit organizations like Harford County based Gospel of Life Ministries to help the unfortunate. Over the last year, I have served as a Board Member on the Joppa/ Joppatowne Community Council. During this timeframe I have cultivated a deeper appreciation for the needs of an established community. Concurrently, I was drawn towards the needs of the neighboring community of Edgewood; of which is fighting to change its status among the county. To ensure the success of this conversion, I avidly attend and support the Edgewood Community Council meetings and Servefest functions that better our community. I am a mentor for ...Continue Reading

Progressive Maryland is hosting a healthcare reform rally in Aberdeen THIS SATURDAY in connection with a series of rallies held from Philadelphia to D.C. this month! We need a big turn out to show just how much Democrats in particular (and for that matter any progressively-minded person that is hoping to see health insurance reform a reality) to show up in big numbers. We turned some heads with almost 80 people in Bel Air last September, now lets see if we can get a few times that many in the progressive stronghold of our county. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO ALL OTHER INTERESTED GROUPS, PARTICULARLY THOSE WITH A VESTED INTEREST IN SEEING HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM A REALITY!!! For more information contact me or visit http://melaniesmarch.com/ or www.progressivemaryland.org. Remember… this Saturday ...Continue Reading
The New Harford Democratic Club has issued an “Action Alert” to those parents, students, and Harford County residents who are upset with the Board of Education’s decision not to air President Barack Obama’s speech to students.
The alert advises those interested to attend a protest planned to be held Tuesday morning, just prior to Obama’s speech, outside the Harford County Public Schools administration building in Bel Air.
Here is the text of the release:
SPECIAL EVENT OF INTEREST TO MEMBERS OF THE THE NEW HARFORD DEMOCRATIC CLUB
Many parents of school-age children in Harford County Public Schools are outraged that the Board of Education will not air President Obama’s speech to students on the importance of education. The speech is slated to be live-streamed on Tuesday, September 8 at 11 a.m. A protest of parents and students will be held, starting at 10:30 a.m., outside the School Administration Bldg. on Hickory Ave. in Bel ...Continue Reading
The Young Democrats of Harford County invite you to a Pro Health Insurance Reform Vigil on Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Harford County Courthouse in Bel Air.
Russ Kovach, President of the YDHC, offered the following description of the event:
The Young Democrats of Harford County is organizing a pro-health care vigil on Tuesday evening, September 8th as congress returns to D.C. This vigil is not intended to emulate the tactics and antics of the ‘tea-party’ type protests; rather I hope to get a crowd of those that support the initiative to have a quiet demonstration that there is a pro-reform majority out there, and that we can get our point across without disrupting meetings and denigrating public officials.
Kovach told The Dagger in a phone interview that the idea is to support the general process, rather than a specific piece of legislation. ...Continue Reading
In advance of the City of Aberdeen’s November 3 municipal election, the New Harford Democratic Club is imploring its members to attend Wednesday night’s meeting to vote on which mayoral candidate the club will endorse – incumbent mayor Mike Bennett or current city council president Mike Hiob.
Aside from the fact that municipal elections are nonpartisan (although Bennett and Hiob are both Democrats, no party affiliation will appear next to the names of any candidates on the Aberdeen election ballot), the New Harford Democratic Club is also creating a stir because it will be voting to endorse a candidate several days before candidates can even begin to file to run for office.
The New Harford Democratic Club will hold its meeting and endorsement vote on September 2, but the City of Aberdeen’s candidate filing period extends from September 5 through October 3.
So what if the man the New Harford Democratic Club votes ...Continue Reading
I’ve been noticing many of those big, 4-ft by 8-ft McCain/Palin and Harris political signs are still standing two months after the elections – in which each of those candidates lost.
I was told by the Democratic Central Committee that these “blights on the Harford County landscape” should have been taken down over weeks ago.
The following letter was drafted by the Democratic Central Committee and sent to the Republican Central Committee a few weeks ago. Have you noticed any reduction in remaining campaign signs since then?
Mr. Michael Geppi, Chair
Harford Co. Republican Central Committee

Dear Mike:
Even as we enter the December holiday season, large Republican signs for McCain and Harris continue to dot the Harford County landscape.
I noticed your letter in The Aegis a few issues ago, thanking the people who helped you put up Republican campaign signs. Apparently they ...Continue Reading
First they took back the White House. Then they surged to an overwhelming majority of the U.S. Senate. Just yesterday, they claimed Maryland’s 1st District Congressional seat.
Now it appears the Democrats have retained the Office of the President of the Aberdeen City Council. On Monday night, the Aberdeen City Council selected councilman Mike Hiob, Democrat, to serve as its president for the next year.
Sure, only 5 people could vote in this election (Aberdeen’s mayor and 4 city council members). Yes, the odds might have been stacked in their favor (no fewer than 3 of the 5 members are Democrats). Of course, Aberdeen municipal elections are (ostensibly) nonpartisan. True, Hiob won the presidency from another Democrat (councilwoman Ruth Elliott). Nevertheless, this is another win in a recent string of impressive victories for the Democratic Party.
The victory didn’t come without its perils, however. Hiob faced opposition from Elliott, who had unseated him ...Continue Reading
The Dagger is hearing that there is some sort of problem or discrepancy with the absentee ballot counting in Harford County which has lawyers and representatives from the local Republican and Democratic parties speeding to the Board of Elections office in Forest Hill.
Apparently, the tallying was expected to be completed today, but now won’t be finished until tomorrow due to the situation.
With fewer than 1,000 votes separating 1st Distrist congressional candidates Andy Harris and Frank Kratovil, the hotly contested race will be decided by the outstanding absentee and provisional ballots.
Harford County voted strongly for Harris and could be key to pulling out the congressional victory.
Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama will take the stage together again tonight (Tuesday) during a 90-minute televised “town-hall” debate in Tennessee.
On the heels of the hotly debated debate about who won the vice presidential debate, Sens. McCain and Obama look to step things up a notch from their first encounter, which was largely a snooze-fest compared to the Sen. Joe Biden vs. Gov. Sarah Palin face-off.
