It’s that time of the year again. It’s time for the Super Bowl of all football games. In case you haven’t guessed, I’m talking about the Super Bowl, which in the minds of some people beats out the Christmas season as The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. I don’t see why. I think we can all make the Big Game a little more subdued if we were all bombarded with sale items and decorations until we go out and buy Super Bowl presents for our family and friends.
I was born on January 29, 1983, the day before Super Bowl XVII. I would like to think that my birth and the Super Bowl have a common bond. It’s not just that both events took place on the same weekend, but that just like my immediate family stopped everything they were doing to celebrate my arrival, football fans all across America ...Continue Reading
I love the Thanksgiving holiday. Well, by “I love the Thanksgiving holiday,” I mean I love watching people go into a crazy tailspin of mixed emotions – including anxiety, anticipation, fear, enjoyment, rage, euphoria, anger and even casual indifference – over preparing a Thanksgiving dinner to celebrate a holiday commemorating a year of harvest. Mind you, as Americans, most of us really don’t harvest anything, but it’s a time of year that we all get together and pretend we have been harvesting. It’s an American tradition at its finest.
Everybody has their own memories of Thanksgiving. Growing up with a large extended family that spanned four generations, my memories include an annual gathering of anywhere from twenty-five to thirty people. It was literally a house divided. The women of the family were busy preparing dinner, exchanging cooking tips and discussing what is wrong with the male members of their ...Continue Reading
Although many are familiar with the Cedar Lane Regional Park in Bel Air, most know it as the home of soccer and lacrosse tournaments. That perception will be changed on Saturday, November 21st when hundreds of football enthusiasts gather at the facility to showcase their gridiron skills.
Between 3 and 6 p.m., youth in grades 1 -12 will demonstrate their abilities in passing, punting and kicking vying for the chance to win one of the top 3 positions and be recognized as one of Harford County’s best during a special effects show provided by “Image Engineering” the group who makes every Baltimore Raven’s pre-game entrance memorable.
Aberdeen High graduates, University of Maryland alumni and current Minnesota Viking linebackers, brothers E.J. and Erin Henderson are honorary co-chairs of this affair.
Both wanted to give something back to the community and decided to do so by supporting The Arc ...Continue Reading

Johnny Unitas would be proud…as would Raymond Berry, Jerry Hill, Don Shinnick, Bill Pellington, Andy Nelson…all of the Baltimore Colts of the Gilded Age in the town they loved to play for, and the state that loved them and never quite got over the ‘kidnapping in the snow storm’ many years ago.
Working for the Colts, and Ernie Acorsi and “Dixie” Walker, I was afforded the chance to be ever so close to the team of greats as they played home games inside the world’s ‘largest insane asylum’….
From 1966 through 1974…..my photographic skills were highly regarded by the Colts organization…then based in Hunt Valley.
Working on the sidelines, many times during the game, as close as the person sitting next to you in your car…I did my job, respected my subjects and came away with an intimate understanding of the word ‘teamwork’ those men so proudly displayed on the field and off…in ...Continue Reading

COUNTY EXECUTIVE URGES COUNTY EMPLOYEES TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE RAVENS
(Bel Air, MD – January 8, 2009) – - County Executive David R. Craig is urging county employees to show their pride and support of the Baltimore Ravens by proudly wearing Ravens apparel or colors to work tomorrow.
“The Baltimore Ravens have had a remarkable year and everyone should be proud of their accomplishments and the hope for another Super Bowl this year,” remarked County Executive Craig. “Purple Passion Friday is one way Harford County employees can let everyone know we support our Ravens,” Craig stated.
The county executive plans to continue the practice of “Purple Passion Friday” throughout the playoffs as the Baltimore Ravens march toward a second Super Bowl in the team’s brief history.
I have a lot to cover since I have taken the last couple weeks off. First the Terps have been able to secure two very big wins coming off an embarrassing loss to UVA. The win two weeks ago over Wake Forest was impressive because the Terps played a complete game.
Their Offense was able to put points on the board and their Defense managed to shut out Wake Forest, who has given them a lot of problems in recent years. To be fair to Wake Forest, their Offense did put them in position to score a couple of times; but with their All-American kicker Sam Swank out of the game they had trouble cashing in on field goal attempts. This win allowed the Terps to stay in control of their own destiny.
The win over N.C. State was impressive because it proved the Terps could ...Continue Reading
As first reported in the Baltimore Sun by Sandra McKee (10/8/08), the Joppatowne Mariners football team has forfeited their first three games of the season due to an ineligible player participating.
The Mariners have been a contender in Class 1A East, making a habit of going deep in the playoffs for several years now. So for the boys on the rest of the team, it’s hard not to feel for them. “It’s a hardship for the team,” noted Teri Kranefeld, manager of communications for Harford County Public Schools.
