The decision whether to renovate the Town of Bel Air’s aging building on Hickory Avenue or move town hall to a new location was one of the keystone issues of last fall’s town election. Now, there may be an answer.
The former BB&T Bank building on Main Street in Bel Air is “under contract”, according to the real estate firm handling its sale, and a source close to the deal told The Dagger that the town is the buyer and will move its administrative offices and meeting space to that location.
The former BB&T building is currently under contract, according to Donnell “Beetle” Smith of RKS Realty. However, Smith declined to identify the prospective buyer, saying only that the transaction was in a study period expected to last through mid-April. Following that period, Smith said he expects the deal to move to settlement in mid-May.
The Dark Horse Saloon will open its doors on Main Street in Bel Air on March 6, renting the building that was once home to the Ropewalk Tavern and The Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille.
Property owner Marc McFaul purchased the building in 2002 and later renovated the space for the Ropewalk Tavern, which opened the following year on Main Street. The bar was put up for sale and eventually closed in May 2007 after bad publicity stemming from two earlier fights at the establishment carved into its business, McFaul said at the time.
McFaul owns and operates another Ropewalk Tavern location in Federal Hill, which he purchased nearly 15 years ago and is still in operation today.
When McFaul put the Main Street property up for sale, he was approached by Green Turtle franchisees looking to rent the space.

A Bel Air man was attacked, robbed and stabbed Thursday morning as he rode his bicycle down South Main Street in downtown Bel Air.
By Thursday afternoon, the unidentified man was recovering from non-life threatening wounds and police were continuing to piece together the case.
Deputy Chief Armand Dupre said the Bel Air Police Department fielded a call at about 10 a.m. Thursday in regard to a Hispanic male in the laundry room at the Wakefield Manor Apartment complex.
Upon arrival, police found the man, who Dupre said had “obviously been cut and/or stabbed,” suffering from non-life threatening wounds.
The investigation was initially stalled because the wounded man didn’t speak English and the language barrier hindered progress until a Spanish-speaking Bel Air Police officer was brought to the scene.
According to the report he gave to police, the man was traveling down South Main Street on his bicycle at about 6 or 6:30 a.m. Thursday ...Continue Reading

Albeit, the weather, delays and material underages all will affect every construction job there is…but the town suffered immeasurable loses when the work drug on, and some folks went out of business as a result…those good folks who chose Bel Air to open a business will not be back…
