The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

After his debut last week, Ilya the Floridian manatee seems to have taken a liking to the Susquehanna River and has recently made appearances on the shores of both Cecil and Harford County.

A Perryville Town Commissioner snapped photos of the wayward sea cow last Wednesday and a group of Havre de Gracians greeted the manatee with cameras and open arms Sunday afternoon when it surfaced near some condominiums.

Officials from the National Aquarium in Baltimore continue to monitor the manatee’s movements and urge people to take precautions to keep themselves and Ilya safe.

The National Aquarium has confirmed another sighting of manatee “Ilya”, reported yesterday in Perryville by Town Commissioner Gary Tennis. The animals appears to be moving freely between the top of the Bay and the Susquehanna River.

Cecil Land Use Alliance To Discuss New Granite Cliffs Subdivision in Port Deposit

The Cecil Land Use Alliance Board has set the next CLUA meeting for Wednesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the Port Deposit VFW.

The VFW is located at 520 Susquehanna River Road (MD 222) about a mile north of downtown Port Deposit. There is ample parking. The entrance to the meeting room is on the side of the building with the parking lot, towards the back.

A main topic of discussion will be the proposed Granite Cliffs subdivision, a 700-home Planned Unit Development with its own water and sewer service, to be located on the hill above the town of Port Deposit. We hope to have many residents of Port Deposit at the meeting and hear their views. The Granite Cliffs developer has requested a special exception to the current zoning (Suburban Residential) to allow the PUD. That request will be considered by the Board of Appeals at its meeting on April 28. The ...Continue Reading

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

A good thing happened recently in Port Deposit.

I know that sounds far-fetched (I mean, previously, the best thing that ever happened to Port Deposit was getting mentioned on four separate instances by Ripley’s “Believe it Or Not”), but when ABC’s popular Extreme Makeover: Home Edition television show rolls into town it’s hard to get things wrong.

But they nearly did this time.

In mid-October the cast and crew of the show, which takes disadvantaged, underprivileged and otherwise down-on-their-luck families and heaps upon them a new mansion filled with untold riches, rolled into Cecil County to visit Freedom Hills Therapeutic Riding Program.

For a quarter-century the Luther family has operated its non-profit program, which offers horseback rides as a type of therapy for people with physical and developmental problems. Things took a turn for the worse about a half-year ago when family patriarch, Carl Luther, died leaving the rest of the family ...Continue Reading
