Del. Donna Stifler Encourages Young Women to Enter $3,000 Scholarship Essay Contest

The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association are co-sponsoring their Thirteenth Annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, which this year will be entitled “Freedom and Civic Virtues.”

The contest’s seven winners will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to NFWL’s Annual Conference November 18-22, 2010 where they will network with, be mentored by and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.

“This is an excellent opportunity for Harford County members of the Class of 2010 and 2011,” said NFWL member, Delegate Donna Stifler. “This contest will help seven young women enhance their understanding of the role of women in politics through a hands-on learning experience. Sen. Glassman Offering Senatorial Scholarships

From the office of Sen. Barry Glassman:

Annapolis, MD: Senator Barry Glassman R-35 has begun accepting applications for his 2010 Maryland State Senatorial scholarship program.

The program is open to interested students in District 35. Applications can be found on the Senator’s website http://www.barryglassman.com. Applicants must submit a copy of their high school transcript as well as a brief narrative on how the scholarship can assist them with their educational goals. Additionally applicants must have filed a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1.

The deadline for applications is April 15th, 2010. Questions and concerns in regards to the program can be answered at the Senator’s Annapolis office at 1-800-492-7122 ext 3603.

An Open Letter to the Residents of Legislative District 7

The Legislative Session officially began its first, full week in Annapolis. It has been an honor to serve as one of your delegates from the District 7 since I was elected in 2002. I have tried to represent the residents of my district with honor and integrity. I truly believe that the General Assembly’s purpose is to provide citizens of the state with a voice in hoe their government is run. Maryland Delegates and Senators in both parties really do embody the term “citizen-legislators”.

Harford Nets Hundreds of State and National Scholars; HCPS Students Earn Recognition for Achievements

From Harford County Public Schools:

The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) recently announced the finalists for the 2009-10 Maryland Distinguished Scholar Award, which include three students from Harford County Public Schools (HCPS).

The finalists from HCPS are Alex Hutcheson, senior at C. Milton Wright High School; Drew Thatcher, senior at C. Milton Wright High School; and Jacob Silverman, senior at Patterson Mill High School. Both Mr. Hutcheson and Mr. Thatcher were recognized for the achievement category, while Mr. Silverman earned his award in the talent category for instrumental music.

Furthermore, 17 Harford students were selected as semi-finalists this year for the Distinguished Scholar award in the achievement category, three were named semi-finalists in the talent category and 201 students and 22 students earned an honorable mention for the achievement and talent categories, respectively.

Harford Schools Seeking Corporate Sponsors for Environmental Scholarships

The Harford County Environmental Scholarship Program awards a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior from each of Harford County’s ten high schools. As with any scholarship program, community support is a vital part of continued success. The monies for these scholarships are provided through the generosity of local businesses who agree to be a Corporate Sponsor of one or more of the schools. The Corporate Sponsor contributes $1000 to each school it chooses to sponsor. In addition, a countywide scholarship is awarded which is also funded through business contributions of $500, $250, and $100. At this juncture, the Harford County Environmental Scholarship Committee invites organizations to support this local scholarship program by becoming a Corporate Sponsor for one or more of our ten local high schools. A bill to help pay college tuition for the families of public safety officers and others killed in the line of duty passed unanimously in both the House and Senate on March 26th and is expected to be signed into law by Governor Martin O’Malley.

The Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program Alterations bill would replace a scholarship program of the same name which had left eligible students on a waiting list for tuition assistance due to funding shortfalls. The problem was first brought to public attention on The Dagger by Lynne Parry, wife of slain Baltimore Police Detective Sergeant Mark Parry.

Sen. Jacobs Offer Maryland State Senatorial Scholarships To Local Students

If you are a high school senior or college student enrolled full time in a Maryland institute of higher education then you may be eligible for a Maryland State Senatorial Scholarship from Senator Nancy Jacobs. You can learn more details about this scholarship at http://www.nancyjacobs.com/Site/Education/index.htm .

Applicants must be a resident of District 34 (verify via http://mdelect.net and insert home address) and attending full time a Maryland institute of higher education (community and private colleges or institutions do count). New awards will be for the fall 2010-2011 calendar school year.

Jacqueline C. Haas Scholarship Fund Announced

Harford Community College and Harford County Public Schools announced today the creation of the Jacqueline C. Haas Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of the esteemed former public school system leader, who passed away suddenly on December 30, 2008.

During her 36-year tenure with Harford County Public Schools, Dr. Haas was a special education teacher, helping teacher, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent. She was highly respected and admired by her peers throughout the state of Maryland and the country, earning Harford County Public Schools and colleagues many accolades through her leadership efforts. Her enthusiasm for learning was contagious and she touched everyone she came in contact with.

The Jacqueline C. Haas Scholarship Fund will enable a Harford County Public School student with a 3.2+ GPA or adults enrolling in the Education Program to receive up to $5,000 ($2,500 awarded per semester) to put toward higher education at Harford Community College. It has been ...Continue Reading

Dagger readers may remember the family of Lynne Parry. Her husband, Baltimore County Police Detective Sergeant Mark Parry was tragically killed in the line of duty in 2002. As police survivors, Lynne’s children qualified for the state-funded Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship, which offsets the cost of college tuition for the families of fallen heroes in Maryland. But last year, the money for the Conroy Scholarship ran out and Lynne’s son was one of 40 qualified applicants put on a waiting list.

State Legislator Provides Emergency Funding for Student Scholarships Due to the State’s Fiscal Restraints

Yesterday afternoon, Delegate J.B. Jennings (R-7th Legislative District) came to the aide for students waiting to receive their scholarship awards distributed by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC).

The MHEC is experiencing funding shortfalls in the Charles W. Riley Fire and Emergency Services Tuition Reimbursement Program and the Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflict Scholarship. As a result, several eligible applicants have been placed on a waiting list. In an effort to help supplement these two (2) programs, Delegate Jennings donated Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) to each from his Legislative Scholarship Fund.

Delegate Jennings said, “As a former member of the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Company and currently serving as member of United States Air National Guard, it comes without any trepidation to provide these two (2) honorable programs with funding from my legislative scholarship account.
