Delaware sees Maryland’s slots, and raises them Sports Betting

May 20, 2008

From the Washington Times

Delaware is on the verge of instituting sports betting.

Last week, the state House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow betting on professional and college sports at state casinos. It now moves onto the Senate, where it likely will pass.

The governor, Ruth Ann Minner, opposes the measure and might veto it should it come to her desk, according to reports. Even so, the bill that passed would not take effect until 2009, after Minner leaves office.

Interesting fact that comes into play here. As many of you know, there is a federal law that bans sports gambling. So how does Nevada (and Oregon to an extent) have it? Turns out that their were a few states that had sports gambling before the ban took effect and are exempt. Besides Nevada, the states were Oregon, Montana and Delaware.

I expect this to pass just after the slot machines are installed all over Maryland…
