The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

Like most things in life, good and bad, The Dagger started off innocently enough.

On September 7, 2007, the first introductory story, a two-paragraph piece aptly titled “Introductions,” was posted onto the Internet. Despite being called an introduction, the story posed more questions than it answered.

Today, September 7, 2008, we hope to finally answer some of those lingering questions as we celebrate The Dagger’s anniversary with some laughter, some tears and enough behind-the-scenes details to hopefully keep us relevant for another year.

Doing Things No One Else Can Or Will – Steve

It all started with a debate that never happened.

Well, that’s not exactly true. You see, I had just started a local cutting edge blog that allowed visitors to debate. Sound familiar? Anyway, a few emails were exchanged between Brian and myself, and I was told The Dagger was founded by a few ex-Aegis reporters. So offered a challenge. I was going to write an article on my site explaining why I thought newspapers should get out of the business of charging for their content online, as our local county newspapers did. The Dagger would host the counterpoint.

With the McDonald’s LPGA Championship in town this week, all of the talk will be about this being Annika’s last tournament here and Lorena’s chances at winning her 3rd major in a row. But what you won’t hear about is their trusty sidekicks – their caddies.

Larry Smich has caddied on the LPGA tour since 1977. He has been on the bag for 3 wins, two with Donna White, one in 1982 and the second in 1985. The last was in 1999 with Mi-Hyun Kim.

Larry is also an avid blogger. At his website, Life On Tour, Larry pulls the curtain back, blogging about life on tour without pulling any punches – especially concerning the pro golfers’ apparent distaste for the tournament since it moved from Delaware to Havre de Grace.

We interviewed Larry before the start of the LPGA:

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

Memorial Day traditionally kicks off the beginning of swimming pool season, but in Aberdeen young swimmers are having a hard time making a splash. The diving boards that had been part of the swim center for years were inexplicably torn out in recent weeks.

To make matters worse, this was to be the inaugural year for the Aberdeen Penguins Dive Team, who were to practice at the city’s swim club. The team was set to kick off the season with a diving clinic on May 31 and June 1, but those plans are now up in the air – because the diving boards are not.

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

“Has hell finally frozen over?” That was my first thought when visiting the City of Aberdeen’s new web site. Of course that may be due to being presented with a header graphic depicting a snow-covered evergreen with Aberdeen’s new slogan, “The Future of Harford”, perhaps a final bit a legacy from the city’s previous mayor.

As promised by the current administration in its transition report, Aberdeen has a fancy new home page. It certainly is a departure from the city’s previous attempts at entering this brave new world. Before we get to the highlights and lowlights of the new site, let’s take a trip down memory lane…
