Six high school seniors were recently selected to serve as student pages for the 2010 Maryland General Assembly, including Rachel Cooper and Alex Hutcheson of C. Milton Wright High School, Brandon Ellis of Joppatowne High School, Kate Kidwell of Fallston High School, and Katherine Clarke and Kate Froelich of John Carroll High School.

Pages were selected after submitting an application and participating in an extensive interview before a 12-person committee, consisting of students and educators from around the county, who tested the applicants on their knowledge of politics and other various topics. The committee was not informed of which school the applicant attends prior to the decision.

A Student Page Breakfast was held December 3, 2009, at Fallston High School, and the newly-elected pages spent the morning getting to know each other and the elected o?cials they will assist during the session. They were a?orded the opportunity to ...Continue Reading

Aberdeen Middle School Students Net Trophy for Robot Design

From Harford County Public Schools:

Elizabeth Cartier, seventh grade science teacher at Aberdeen Middle School, recently led her middle school students to a win in the 2009 “Smart Move” Challenge as part of the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Competition.

FIRST is an acronym for the phrase ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology,’ and every year FLL works with experts in the field to develop a challenge that relates to a significant real-world issue. The end result is two-fold and requires research to complete the project, as well as science and engineering to master the complex missions of the robot game. The goal of the 2009 “Smart Move” Challenge was to change the way people view transportation.

Ms. Cartier advised the school’s first-ever robotics team, which won the technical design trophy for the best robot design and presentation at Salisbury Middle School on January 9th. The team qualified to compete ...Continue Reading

Hockenberry: Disgusted With Harford Schools New Lunch Policy

The following letter was received from Margie Hockenberry, an involved parent of a Havre de Grace Middle School student:

I am writing to express my disgust with a supposed HCPS new lunch policy regarding students whose lunch accounts go into the “negative”.

Apparently, when a middle or high school students lunch account goes into the negative, they can be refused lunch. According to food and nutrition administration at HdGMS [Havre de Grace Middle School] this is a new policy from Harford County’s Food and Nutrition Services and Superintendent. Below is a story a dear friend that brought this to my attention.

My neighbor’s son attends Havre de Grace Middle. He informed his mother that his account was negative by $4 and he needed money. As most of us parents, she is busy. She has a daughter to run to dance, swimming and gymnastics, as well as son involved in sports. You know how ...Continue Reading

Bel Air High School – Thanks for the Memories

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

It came from dust, and unto dust it shall return.

The Bel Air High School building rose from the earth sixty years ago and it will be demolished sometime this October. The wreckage has already begun as a glorious new replacement building stands by, ready to welcome students at the start of the new school year. Hallelujah!

As the parent of a Bel Air graduate and a past president of the BAHS PTSA, I know firsthand how the community struggled to cope with the impact of a failing building. And I was one of the many people who fought to have the old building replaced. So I wasn’t planning to shed any tears when the old walls came tumbling down.

But on eve of destruction, I wondered about what happened inside that building over the years. From its state-of-the-art beginnings in 1950, through (and way past) obsolescence, the Bel Air building witnessed the ...Continue Reading

Middle School Student Hit By Vehicle Driven By High School Student At Patterson Mill

by

A middle school student was hit by a vehicle at Patterson Mill after high school let out, while the middle school was still in session. She was reportedly lifted on a body board and transported to the hospital.

Students at the school have reported that the vehicle was apparently driven by a 15-year-old, unlicensed high school student, and that it is owned by a custodian at the school.

The middle school student was in gym class at the time of the accident.

A somewhat cryptic Alert Now call went out to parents Friday night from Principal Wayne Thibeault who said:

“This afternoon at approximately 2:35PM a seventh grade student was struck by a motor vehicle on school property. The student was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medial Center in stable condition. The entire matter is being investigated by the Harford County Sheriff’s Department. The school will continue to investigate the situation and appropriate disciplinary ...Continue Reading

Harford County Board of Education Approves Policy Banning Food Rewards

The Dagger | Harford County News With an Edge: Latest post

No more Honors’ breakfasts? No more pizza parties? No more snacks during Maryland School Assessment tests?

It all depends on the meaning that will be assigned to the following statement, adopted as part of a revised Wellness Policy, by the Harford County Board of Education at their meeting Monday in Bel Air.

l. Schools/staff shall refrain from using food or beverages at any time as either reward or punishment for academic or instructional achievement, performance, effort or activity in any respect or for behavior modification or punishment.

Did you think that the words “shall refrain” meant “shall refrain” and “at any time” meant “at any time”? Ha!

School board counsel Patrick Spicer told the board prior their vote that the public had provided more input on the proposed Wellness Policy than on any other in recent memory, and that questions as to whether pizza parties and the like ...Continue Reading
