The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association are co-sponsoring their Thirteenth Annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, which this year will be entitled “Freedom and Civic Virtues.”
The contest’s seven winners will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to NFWL’s Annual Conference November 18-22, 2010 where they will network with, be mentored by and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Harford County members of the Class of 2010 and 2011,” said NFWL member, Delegate Donna Stifler. “This contest will help seven young women enhance their understanding of the role of women in politics through a hands-on learning experience. BEL AIR, Md.—Four athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play volleyball for Harford beginning with the 2010 season, head coach Jason Colangelo announced today. Amanda Barger, Ashley Dorsey, Amanda Mackey and Emma Anderson signed with the Fighting Owls during a formal ceremony on Thursday night at Susquehanna Center and will become the first volleyball class to play at the NJCAA Divison-I level after Harford declared its reclassification earlier this month.
“These ladies were four very strong players in the county and bring a lot of skill and determination to Harford,” Colangelo said. “They have great attitudes, are very mature and are willing to do what it takes to play at the next level.”

BEL AIR, Md.—The No. 14 Harford women’s soccer team will return to the NJCAA Division-I National Tournament for the first time since 2006 after defeating Cape Fear, 4-0 in the District H Championship on Saturday at Harford Stadium. The Fighting Owls (17-2-1) and Sea Devils (15-5) took a scoreless tie into halftime, but Harford scored three times within a 4:27 span as they rolled to the 4-0 win.
Freshman Erin Lynn (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led the way for the Owls with a goal and an assist on the day, while sophomore Becca Bazemore (Churchville, Md./C. EDGEWOOD, MD — Over 100 people attended the inaugural luncheon Thursday, 8 October, 2009, of the newly-formed Mid-Atlantic chapter of the national organization Women In Defense.
“We literally sold every seat the restaurant had available for us,” said Tamera Rush, Mid-Atlantic Chapter Vice President. “I think the overwhelming turn-out speaks to the need women who work in the defense sector have for networking and professional development opportunities.”

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s soccer team, which was recently ranked No. 13 among NJCAA Division I teams by the NSCAA/adidas Junior College poll, won its fifth straight as it downed CCBC-Catonsville, 4-1, on Tuesday night at Harford Stadium.
Freshman Beth Lambros (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) scored all of the Fighting Owls’ (10-1, 5-0 MDJUCO) four goals, for her third eight-point game of the season and fifth-straight game with two goals or more, while Stephanie Barlage added the lone goal for the Cardinals (5-2, 4-1 MDJUCO) during the second half.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Harford women’s soccer freshman forward Beth Lambros (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) has been named the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending September 27, the national office announced Wednesday.
Lambros has scored at least two goals per game for the last five straight games and has scored at least one point in all games this season, except in the season-opener against Anne Arundel. The rookie forward leads Harford and the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference with 47 points (19g, 9a) on the season. She has had six, multiple-goal games so far in 2009, including a stretch of three games where she notched consecutive hat tricks against Cecil, Frederick and Mary Washington. Lambros also ranks fifth in the country with 47 points and is tied for sixth with 19 goals.
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis team is on track to repeat its feat from one year ago, when it posted a perfect, 10-0 season. After opening the 2009 season with an 8-1 win at Hagerstown on September 14, the Fighting Owls (4-0, 2-0 MDJUCO) notched three more dual match victories in the last two weeks, in addition to claiming the Harford Invitational and Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional Championship titles.
Harford extended its unbeaten streak to 14 straight matches over the course of two years as it notched a 9-0 victory against Mercer at home on September 18, a 9-0 win at Montgomery College-Rockville on September 22 and an 8-1 decision at Mercer on September 24. Harford’s last dual meet loss dates back to October 23, 2007 when they fell to Cecil, 6-3.

FREDERICK, Md.—Freshman Beth Lambros (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) recorded a hat trick for the second consecutive game as the Harford women’s soccer team routed Frederick, 9-1, on Tuesday at Frederick Community College.
The Fighting Owls (7-1, 4-0 MDJUCO) scored nine goals for the second straight game and have already eclipsed their 2008 total of 38 goals, as they have scored 40 goals through eight games and still have nine games left in the regular season.
Allison Stone scored the lone goal for the Cougars (3-4, 0-4 MDJUCO), while Becca Bowers and Katie Thomas combined for 17 saves on the day.

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s volleyball team put up a valiant fight as it fell, 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 23-25, 25-15) to No. 20 College of Southern Maryland on Thursday night at Susquehanna Center. The Fighting Owls (0-8, 0-3 MDJUCO) knocked off the nationally-ranked Hawks (16-2, 3-0 MDJUCO) in the third set and kept them close in the fourth before an injury forced Harford to finish the match without any substitutes or a libero.

COLORA, Md.—The Harford women’s soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the season against Burlington on Monday with a 9-0 drubbing of Cecil on Wednesday at West Nottingham Academy. Redshirt freshman Lyndsie Ludwig (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright/Wilmington) and freshman Beth Lambros (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) notched hat tricks for the Fighting Owls (6-1, 3-0 MDJUCO) while also adding one assist each.
The Owls were relentless, pelting the Seahawks (0-6, 0-4 MDJUCO) with 40 shots, 25 of them on goal. Cecil keeper Amanda Lester had a career-day, due to the sheer volume of chances, totaling 16 saves in 90:00.
Ludwig and Lambros would trade goals within five minutes of each other from the 6th to the 11th minute with assists by freshmen Erin Lynn (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Jet Amerg (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun), respectively, to take a 2-0 lead.
