Maryland continues to become the worst state in the nation in terms of protecting its citizens against the invasion of illegal aliens. It is accurate to characterize Maryland as the Number One “Sanctuary State” in America. The Governor and General Assembly leaders support the legislative agenda of CASA of Maryland and other pro-illegal proponents. Once again, i n the 2008 session of the Maryland General Assembly, all of the legislation proposed by lawmakers in opposition to illegal aliens was defeated. Moreover, none of these much needed proposals were allowed to emerge from committee for a full floor vote.
I introduced the Citizens Right Act which many consider to be the centerpiece of any anti-illegals agenda. This initiative would have, for the first time, permitted ordinary citizens to file a complaint against elected officials based on the premise that the official is violating the Federal Immigration Act. The complaint could eventually result in the official being removed from public office.
Another important bill was the Voter Verification and Fairness Act which would require affidavits confirming that an individual is an eligible voter. The bill would prevent illegal aliens from voting, especially the ones that are exploiting the motor-voter law associated with acquiring drivers’ licenses.
I introduced the bill that would mandate English as the official and formal language of Maryland State Government. All of these positive initiatives were defeated by the friends and supporters of illegals that dominate the State Legislature.
I continued my efforts on the floor of the House by attempting to remove a $1 million gift from Governor O’Malley’s budget that was designated as funding for CASA of Maryland. CASA is the 800 pound gorilla in Maryland that supports illegal aliens and appears to exercise unusual control over the Governor and General Assembly. Although the amendment failed, I managed to expose a number of negatives about CASA during the floor debate that helped educate my colleagues and members of the press.
There were nine additional pieces of legislation by other lawmakers that would have assisted our state to fight the battle against illegal aliens and their co-conspirators. The Real ID Act, prohibition of public assistance to illegals, and a ban on sanctuary cities were among the more important initiatives that failed.
The good news is that more bills were introduced on our side and a growing number of legislators participated. There was an increase in the quality of the testimony supporting our legislation and more witnesses travelled to Annapolis to testify.
On the negative side, as was mentioned, all of our legislation was defeated. CASA of Maryland received increased funding, a bill to promote foreign languages, and another piece of legislation that allows CASA to sue or initiate legal actions against employers passed.
Adding insult to injury, a phoney piece of legislation allegedly promoting the idea of studying the impact of immigrants on the State of Maryland was successful. A real and effective bill that was introduced to study the impact of illegal immigration failed. The phoney bill will be used to prove that immigrants are productive and an asset to our state. This study is simply a ploy to justify and move forward the CASA and illegal alien agenda.
Obviously, it was a difficult session. However, we all know that the only way you really fail is when you quit. I am not going to surrender our great state to a group of misguided “lawmakers who support lawbreakers and powerful politicians who are out of touch with the people.”
Thank you for your continued support on this issue. If I may be of any assistance to you or your family in the future, please don’t hesitate to let me know. You may contact me at 410-238-0025.

CASA is an acronym that stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. It was to my understanding that this group works to represent children who are abused and/or neglected, giving them a voice in an already bogged down and failed system.
Dagger reader, can you please explain some of the negatives in which you refer to.
Steve says
Molly,
There are two CASA’s in Maryland. The one Delegate McDonough is referring to is CASA of Maryland, or CASA de Maryland, a Latino and immigration advocacy and assistance organization.

Thanks Steve for the clarification.

Don’t forget about the great state of “Texas”. We are obviously the stepping stone to the rest of the nation when it comes to the allowance of illegals being able to move about freely in our country. I am personally sick and tired of hearing the excuse that the illegals are the only ones who will dig ditches, lay concrete or tile your floor. If the government would wise up to the expense wasted in welfare paid out to able bodied dead beat adults, who have found welfare to be a way of life, and get them off their couches and out digging ditches, laying concrete and tiling floors, then the illegals would have no need to come to America because there would be no job market available. And if that doesn’t get your blood bubbling, why, when an illegal commits a crime are they provided free services paid by American tax payers? Maryland, you do not stand alone with this sentiment of frustration.
Joshua says
A pathetically hate filled letter. The level to which Del. McDonough will go to dehumanize these issues would be funny if we didn’t all know where dehumanizing people gets you.
Lets look at some decriptive phrases here.
“Illegals Gain Power”.
” protecting its citizens”
“invasion of illegal aliens.”
“friends and supporters of illegals”, (this one is nice because it dehumanizes the people AND his opponents, two in one blow)
The tired cliched message? They’re not people. This is not an issue that deals with real humans. It’s about alien invasion, brainwashing, and the old standby that gets the most apathetic racists blood bubbling, someone wants to take from you.
Do they hand out an evil politician playbook when you get elected, or does it come naturally?
And hey Unc. When you say, “when an illegal commits a crime are they provided free services paid by American tax payers”, are you referring to their legal defense? Would you rather they didn’t have one?
RWinger says
When one talks about a strategic invasion in the United States thoughts go to Pearl Harbor or the campaign of 1812 and acts of war. There is another strategic invasion, it’s a long term invasion that cripples a country from withi, it’s an invasion that has been going on for years and has been gaining steam over the past 20 years. Like it or not the facts stand that illegal immigration across our southern borders has been eating away at the infrastructure of the United States. It has an adverse effect on the economy, it is adding to the medical costs, it is taking jobs from American citizens, it has entered into our schools, it is threatening English as the primary language in the United States. Illegal immigration is an invasion and one only has to look at activities in California where an American flag is burned by protesters waving the Mexican flag (if it’s so great in Mexico, go back!) The Peolpe’s Republic of Montgomery County (Wheaton) is a hot bed for illegals with ties to MS13 and if you don’t know anything about MS13 or the Mexican Mafia please know this…..their activities are a threat to public safety.
I’m all for legal immigration, that’s what made this country. If people in Mexico, Central America, and South America want to come to this country, DO IT LEGALLY. Crossing a border in the dead of night and purchasing false Social Security Cards and ID is not legally coming to this country. The important question to ask is if these illegals want to become American citizens and I personally don’t think that they do. I feel that they want to come here for money, for a lifestyle and products not offered in their country of origin, and to further criminal enterprises, all the while eating away at the infrastructure of a world power.
Try going south of the border and demanding English be spoken. Try going south of the border and committing a simple traffic infraction (a US jail is the Marriot compared with the facilities down there). Try getting a fair trial as a gringo. Try getting medical attention (and the term is questionable) as a gringo.
Sad to think that the decline and fall of the United States will be at the hands of liberal politicians that allow the illegal immigration practice to continue.

RWinger alway’s pleasant you bring your thought’s to the dagger mexico is NOT a friendly place to gringo’s. it’s not a place too sight see on your own. the very least you can expect is a beating & robbed.
the mexican authority’s have little concern for your health or welfare.
you’ can disapear in that country’ very quickly. I lost a friend there in early 1968 who was beaten & robbed. while sight seeing. he bought a gun & went back down never saw him again.
I my self visited one time. it’s and any thing goes country’. if it’s illegal’ it’s in mexico.

there asking for the same right’s american’s have worked for years to get & it appears there makeing head way. and then there’s the wife&kid’s awaiting transport to the land of milk & honey’
well the milk is turning sour& the honey bee’s are dieing off. I would almost be willing to bet. we have more illegal people WORKING! than those who are on public assistance. now that is another disgrace to the american people
I find them the ( mexican) people to be very friendly. but wanting too much to soon.

Vet All to often people dont understand that a one paragraph comment is not all-encompassing.
My visit to mexico was unscripted and the poverty is inbeleivable…much akin to the conditions homless live in here when taking residance in a vacant lot or under a bridge.
What people need to understand…is that in many cases a person making labor wages in the us can live like a king in the environment they are accoustomned to on what wpould be considered pverty wages here…a few years invested and in that economy your a wealthy man.
To many (not all,) its akin to a us cotizen who could make 40 or 50 grand here going to saudi and making 100…150 thousand in an oil fiels for a few years.
Its all reletive.
So theres two things…those who want to become americans legally…and those who are in it for the bennies and could care less about america.
Molly says
FYI- I just clicked on one of the google ad links related to this story…Free M.D. report Are illegals making you sick? The first few paragraphs read as follows…
“The unchecked flow of illegal border-hoppers from the south is washing over us like a Texas flash flood. It negatively impacts our bottom line, greatly compromises our security, and erodes our national identity… but what nobody’s talking about is how serious a public health issue it is.
They’re trying to cheat the system, but in the end, you’re the one who pays. Maybe you don’t know this, but all immigrants who want to qualify for their green cards have to go through a thorough testing process. Basically, they have to prove that they don’t have any contagious diseases or drug addictions.
Do you have any idea how rampant diseases are in Third World countries that don’t have the same sanitary conditions and health care available to them? Our screening process is in place to keep us all safe. Whether people choose to accept it or not, the truth is that too many of the illegals who “bypass” this testing process are coming into this country with more than just their “dream of a better life”-they’re also bringing very contagious, and sometimes very deadly, diseases.”
joshua says
I could use a good concussion these days, believe me.
Vet, respectfully, McDonough dehumanizes these people. His letter drips with it. He’s not addressing the issues of legal versus non legal immigration. He’s hate-mongering. And doing a poor job of it, I might add.
And as far as the google ad, great. Far fetched unproveable racism. Is that what they see at the Dagger, is that what they think our readers respond too?
RWinger says
Joshua, you are now laid laid off from your job. We have found a person with questionable immigration status (but pretty good copies of documents) and we can pay them a lot less. Go luck. By the way, your health coverage is denied, you don’t qualify for assistance because 200 illegals got into the state and dropped babies which are now US citizens and we can’y seperate the mother’s from the babies so tough luck pal. You’ll land another job, that is if you speak Spanish fluently because the X Corporation is going politically correct these days and we don’t want to offend anyone with the exception of the hard working US citizen. Of course you could drive around to clear your head only to get struck by a vehicle operated by an illegal with no license or no insurance. Just don’t complain, that would make you a hate monger racists.
Food for thought, when you or someone you care about falls victim to an act by an illegal it is not that easy to turn the other cheek.
RichieC says

You forgot to mention that when you do get hit your ins co will settle with them insured or not…pay them…and even if you dont get a direct rate increase…you will get one in the form of a general rate increas.

Joshua I would hope’ the reader’s of the dagger would not see the dagger as ”racist” but rather as something’ new in the line’s of reporting.
when public assistance issue’s become public. they up set me the most. 26.9 people stay on pubic assist. 2 too 5 years. the remaining balance. 19.6
I have had to work for every thing. nothing given. latest health diagnosis. as of yesterday
congestive heart failure. type 2 diabete’s. high blood pressure. failing lung’s. inhaler now being used. just to breathe. I don’t ask the working people for there tax money, I still work for mine.
I can not blame the employer who is trying to survive’ hireing cheap labor. but some of us are simply trying to survive. we must get america back on it’s feet.
be american hire american.
Delegate Dan Riley says
The reason we have an immigration policy is to allow our infrastructure to adjust to the number of immigrants coming into our country. There is only so much tax money out there to pay for needed services. When too many immigrants, legal or illegal, come into our country they quickly use up available services taking away from citizens who have lived here all their lives. Let me give you an example…Prince Georges Hospital. The hospital just received a $50 million package from the State so that it doesn’t go under. Why is the hospital in trouble? The answer, in part, is that over 30% of its care is uncompensated because of illegal immigrants. That $50 million is paid for by all the taxpayers of Maryland.
Remember that our tax revenues have a limit and that charity begins at home. We should help our own first. I am not being cold-hearted. When there are too many immigrants coming into a country, as I have said before, there is a tremendous burden on the infrastructure. For those who study history look at the Roman Empire. It fell for many reasons and one of the main reasons was an unchecked immigration policy.
By the way, I am an immigrant from England. My mom, who was married to a G.I. during W.W.II, had to wait 15 months before she was allowed to come to the U.S.A. During the wait she gave birth to me.

I for got to mention the glycerine tablet’s, for the chest pain. ( angina) in the above post. my money’ your money every body’s money going down the drain.
my insurance only pay’s 80% percent of my bill’s. the other 20% percent is on me. I’am saveing the v.a. hospital for last. when I can’t work no more.
be assured it’s alway’s a pleasure to hear from our delegate’s. who are takeing time to stop & speak to the people.

Gentlemen, my point was not about the relative merits of illegal immigration. I think we’ve covered that ground a few times in the past. My point is to call bullshit on another politician trying to rile his base with a manipulative letter designed to dehumanize the “enemy”. Do you really think he wants to protect citzens? Or does he want to get some mileage out of a fake fight with whatever social group is easiest to pretend to attack? That’s also my point with the google ad Molly mentioned.
What must they think of us to think that we’d fall for it? ALL of us, right left or whatever.
RichieC says
Josh…I dont see anything over the top in the letter, (and I know over the top), its an unpleasent issue and there is no way to nicley say…sorry we dont…cant want you because its disrupting and depleting the very things you are after !
There is an immigrition process for a reason…screening…assimilation both ways..and stressing our infrastructure and society is just not fair for Americans. One of the founding principals in the founding of our govt was to provide security for its citizens…and thats exactly whats happening…in a democratic way. You should be proud that CASA at least gets a hearing and the oppertunity to vioce. As don King says “only in america” ! (or somthing like that)
No one wants to say no…but there are hard cold facts.
As to “riling his constincuey”…seems to me he is showing support to them. If they dont like it he will be back on the farm on election day.
I do understand your frustration.
Anon says
I support a 3-strikes your out bill for elected officials where where if an idiot legislator like Del. McDonough introduces 3 unconstitutional bills, voters across the state can file suit against him. The bill will state that the penalties for wasting our time and resources include being removal from office AND monetary fines and penalties at a minimum equal to what the last 4 years of campaign donations. Fines double if you subject the public to a ratty hair piece.
Many consider it to be the centerpiece of any anti-idiot, anti-bigot agenda.
amazed... says
@Joshua and Anon, it’s only human nature to want to lash out at the messenger when you are so deeply troubled by the message. Had he been advocating rights for illegals you would be defending him. My spouse is a citizen via legal immigration and Naturalization and unless you’ve been through that process, with all due respect, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Anyone that supports the rights of illegals spits in the eye of those that went through the legal process of forms, fees, trips to INS for fingerprinting, interviewing, etc. I just wish the bleeding hearts would fight to improve the conditions in the countries these illegals are fleeing. The government is charged with maintaining the borders of this country and it is a miserable failure at it.
I’m also a little confused by Anon’s allusion that not granting rights to illegals is somehow unconstitutional.
Legal American says
Everyone talks about illegal immigrants and children born in the USA of illegal parents automatically become a American citizen. A little known fact that during the years of the great rush to be come a american citizen going thru Ellis island,a pregnant women that has a baby born in the hospital on the Ellis Island, that baby was not considered a legal resident because the parent had not gone thru the process of declaration.
