BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball team scored a season-high 103 points as it downed Frederick, 103-95, on Saturday at Susquehanna Center.
Freshman Butch Faulcon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led the Fighting Owls (4-6, 2-2 MDJUCO) with a season-high double-double of 29 points and 15 rebounds, as he shot 10-for-15 from the floor, 9-for-11 from the line and also dished out four assists. Freshman Jasper Holleman (Richmond, Va./Mataoca) was just short of a double-double as well as he put up 22 points and tallied eight assists and Kartrell Claiborne posted his second double-double of the season, totaling 10 points and 11 rebounds, with seven of those points coming during the last 7:00 of the game.
Freshman Troy Burgan was the only other Owl player with double-digit points as he shot 5-for-6 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe for a total of 17 points, while Nate Frazier led the Cougars (4-6, 3-2 MDJUCO) with 27 points, shooting 11-for-18 from the field.
Frederick took the early, 8-4, lead but a 7-0 lead by Harford over the next 45 seconds put the Owls up 11-8 with 17:01 remaining. Harford would build the lead to 10, 30-20 at the 9:35 mark, but the Cougars battled back with a 16-5 run over the next two minutes to take a brief, 36-35 with 6:35 left in the half.
A layup from freshman Jesse Volk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) gave Harford the 37-36 lead and the Owls would bring their advantage up to nine points, 47-38 with 4:00 left, but Frederick chipped away once again, to take a six-point deficit into halftime, 52-46.
The Owls held a slight advantage over Frederick for the majority of the second half, extending their lead to nine points early in the period, 57-48, with just over 17 minutes left.
The Cougars continued to battle back, however, and came within just two points on five different occasions before knotting the score at 81 points and again at 83 points, with less than seven minutes to play.
After a 7-2 run by Harford in just over a minute and a half, the Owls lead by five, 90-85, with 4:43 to go and the Cougars would come no closer than three points for the remainder of the game as Harford cruised to the 103-95 win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 9 when they host offensive league-leading Hagerstown, who are averaging over 100 points per game, at 7:00 p.m.
