BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s basketball dropped a tough-fought 109-95 contest to Hagerstown on Tuesday night at the Susquehanna Center after leading, 50-47 at halftime.
The Fighting Owls (4-7, 2-3 MDJUCO) held the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference-leading scoring Hawks (10-1, 5-0 MDJUCO) to just 34.6% shooting in the first half, but couldn’t hold off as Hagerstown connected for 62 points in the second stanza in a game that saw 55 total fouls, 33 of them occurring in the second half.
Freshman Butch Faulcon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led Harford with a double-double for the second straight game, totaling 27 points and 15 rebounds on 9-for-18 shooting, 9-for-10 from the line and dishing out four assists. It was Faulcon’s fourth straight game with double-digit points, while freshmen Troy Burgan (Akron, Ohio/North) and Kartrell Claiborne (Prince George, Va./Prince George) tallied their third straight games in double-figures.
Burgan put up 14 points and grabbed eight boards while also handing out seven assists and Claiborne tallied 18 points and seven boards.
Freshman Lionel Perkins (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) also made it into double-digits with 20 points, shooting 3-for-7 from behind the arc as well as four rebounds, while K’yan Andrews and Isaiah Hill posted double-doubles for the Hawks with 24 points and 11 rebounds and 15 points and 13 rebounds, respectively.
After giving up a seven straight points to start the first half, the Owls went on a 10-5 run to come within two of the Hawks, 12-10 at the 15:19 mark. After two consecutive baskets, Hagerstown was up by seven once again, 17-10, but a 10-2 run over the next 2:15 gave Harford its first lead of the game, 20-19 with 12:34 to go.
The Owls tacked on another five points to complete the 15-2 run which saw three assists from freshman Jasper Holleman (Richmond, Va./Mataoca) and treys by Jesse Volk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Perkins and took a 25-19 advantage with 11:30 to play.
After a made and missed free throw by Andrews, Faulcon tacked on a back door layup thanks to a quick pass from Burgan to give the Owls their largest lead of the game, 27-20 with less than 11 minutes left in the half.
The Hawks would battle back with a 6-0 run of their own however, to come within one point of Harford, 27-26 at the 9:43 mark and would take back the lead, 31-29, with 8:45 before Faulcon knotted the score with a layup from Perkins and Claiborne gave Harford a 33-31 lead after he knocked down two free throws.
The Hawks would tie the score once more, but wouldn’t come any closer than one point away as Harford took a 50-47 lead into the half.
Faulcon started the second half scoring off with two makes from the charity stripe to give Harford a five-point lead, 52-47, but Hagerstown slowly whittled away at the lead and took a 58-57 advantage with a dunk from Hill with 17:00 left to play.
The game would see three ties and nine lead changes over the next seven minutes, before the Hawks took control of the contest for good with 10 minutes to go in the second period, 78-77. After a Hawk layup and tip-in from Claiborne put Harford within one point, Hagerstown rattled off a 17-5 run, which saw eight made free throws, over the next 3:04 to take a 13-point lead, 97-84, over the Owls.
After a lay-up by Claiborne cut the Hagerstown lead to 11, 97-86, with six minutes left, the Owls began to struggle from the floor, connecting on just four shots for nine points, while sending the Hawks to the line seven times as they cruised to the 109-95 victory.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Saturday when they host Patrick Henry in a 4:00 p.m. contest that is part of a double-header with the women’s team that will be tape delayed by the local Harford Cable Network.
