(Bel Air, MD – February 4, 2009) – – Harford County Executive David R. Craig has been honored by the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America with the Silver Beaver Award during a National Court of Honor at Martin’s West in Baltimore. Craig was one of 16 selected to receive this prestigious award.
Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is presented for distinguished service to young people within a BSA local council. More than 50,000 recognitions have been conferred to date. The recipient must be a registered adult member of the BSA.
Those who receive the Silver Beaver Award are recognized for their distinguished service to youth and the wide range of their professional and civic responsibilities which have fulfilled Scouting’s aim of providing responsible, mature adults as good models for youth.
County Executive Craig has served the citizens of Harford County at several levels of government. In his hometown of Havre de Grace he was first elected to the City Council in 1979 and went on to become mayor of Havre de Grace in 1985. Later he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegate from District 34 where he served from 1991 until 1994. He was then elected to the Senate of Maryland where he served with distinction from 1995 until 1998.
In 2005 he was appointed to serve the unexpired term of former County Executive James M. Harkins. In 2006 he was elected as County Executive, the office which he currently holds.
In addition to his duties as Harford County Executive, Craig currently serves as chair of the Board of Directors of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council and is the 1st Vice President of the Maryland Association of Counties.
The County Executive is also a great supporter and friend of the Boy Scouts. He has served as District Vice Chair for the Harford District, and was honored with the Good Scout Award, Harford District, Baltimore Area Council in 2007. Craig is also the proud father of Randy Craig, a member of the Havre de Grace City Council and Eagle Scout.
Commenting on receiving the award, County Executive Craig stated, “I am deeply honored and humbled by this prestigious award. Throughout my life I have been inspired by and associated with leaders in our community whose roots were in scouting,” Craig remarked.
….I also heard that Havre de Grace city councilmember Joe Kochenderfer won the award also. It’s the highest award any adult can win. It’s like Eagle Scout status for older people. Congrats David and Joe…..you guys are studs!
Does this mean that the next time I see David Craig out and about I can say, “Hey Dave, nice beaver?”
I thought the Silver Beaver award was awarded to seinor citizens who were strippers….
