LARGO, Md.—The Harford baseball team won its second straight as it downed Prince George’s, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Prince George’s Community College. Freshman Kyle Otstot (Lewisberry, Pa./Redland) tacked on the game-winning two-run single in the top of the eighth that gave Harford a 5-3 lead on the way to the 5-4 win.
Otstot was 1-for-4 on the day with two RBI, while freshman Woody Wlodarczyk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was the only Fighting Owl player with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with one run scored, two RBI and a double.
Freshman Kyle Rooker (2-0) (Coco Beach, Fla./Space Coast) picked up his second win of the season after giving up just one earned run (three total) on five hits and striking out six in seven innings, while freshman Brendon Meyers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) earned his first save after pitching a brilliant inning in relief, where he struck out the side.
Danny Herron led the way for the Owls (4-21, 0-9), going 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI while Anderson Rodriguez was tabbed with the loss after giving up two runs and two hits while fanning two batters in two innings.
Rooker and Prince George’s starter Eric Brooks shut their opposition down early, as both teams accounted for just one hit each in the first three and a half innings before PG started the scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Rodriguez crossed the plate on a Harford error.
The Fighting Owls wouldn’t answer until the sixth as Wlodarczyk notched a two-run double and freshman Mike Krider (State College, Pa./State College) added an RBI single to give Harford a 3-1 lead.
Rodriguez would put Prince George’s within one with an RBI double and Mike Diaz would plate the tying run with a fielder’s choice RBI to knot the score at three.
Rodriguez would take the mound for the Owls in the eighth and walk Harford’s first two batters, strike out the next, and walk a third to load the bases for Otstot who belted a two-run single to right that gave Harford a two-run, 5-3 lead.
Freshman Dustin Morgan (Berryville, Va./Clark County/Wilmington) came into relief in the eighth for Harford and gave up one unearned run and one hit to cut the lead to one run, 5-4.
Rodriguez would retire the Harford lineup in order before Meyers took the mound and struck out the side to earn the save on the way to the 5-4 win for Harford.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Delaware Tech-Georgetown for a 3:00 p.m. matchup before hosting CCBC-Dundalk on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Harford Baseball Field.
