SCOTTBSBORO, Ala.—Freshman Anthony Vincenti (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) leads the Harford golf team with a 154 (76, 78) after two rounds at the 2009 NJCAA Division II National Tournament at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, Ala.
Vincenti shot a 78 on Tuesday’s second round to go with a 76 on Monday and is tied for 70th overall after two days. Vincenti birdied the sixth hole on day one and shot an even 38 on the back and front nine to finish with a 78, while posting a 40 on the way out on the second day and birdieing two par 5’s on the 10th and 15th holes to shoot a 38 on the way back for a 76.
Sophomore Tony Tiburzi (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) is just behind Vincenti in a tie for 76th (155) after shooting a 79 on day one and 76 on day two, with a two-stroke birdie on the par 3 eighth hole on Monday, which helped him shoot a round low 36 on the front nine before countering with a 43 on the back. Tiburzi registered a four-stroke birdie on the par 5 second hole to shoot a 37 on the front nine on day two, while finishing with a 39 on the back nine.
Sophomore Chris Appel (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) rounds out the Fighting Owl participants in an 86th (157) place tie with an 82 during the first round and a team-low 75 on the second day. Appel also finished with a birdie on Monday, taking four strokes on the par 5 15th to shoot a 40 for the back nine and 42 for the front. Appel bested all the Harford players with three birdies on day two, on the fourth, seventh and 12th holes, to shoot a 38 front nine and 37 back nine total.
David Griffin of Rend Lake (Ill.) leads the field with a tournament-low eight-under 136 (66, 70), while South Mountain (Ariz.) leads the team standing with a one-under combined score of 575.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Wednesday as Appel tees off with a three-man pairing at 8:48 a.m., Tiburzi follows with his group at 8:57 a.m. and Vincenti begins the day at 10:00 a.m.
