great! let’s hold a festival but close a library. Fabulous priorities here!
The company I work for cut their company picnic and family festival this year to save $60k rather than lay off employees… priorities people!!
This isn’t a rant against hispanic people or the idea of the festival – but how about if we spend money on needs, not wants. Isn’t that what we teach our kids? Needs come first, wants are out of the extra monies left over… currently there are no extra monies lying around for play time.

and yes, I would say cancel the fireworks this year as well – if we’re hurting financially then these luxury items should be the first to go.
Patrick says
Juls,
I completely understand your frustration. However, this festival is being held at a local church, by a local church. And the Bel Air Fireworks display is being graciously sponsored by Harford Mutual Insurance Company.
And besides, the only people hurting are people like you and I. The County Government is just becoming slightly accountable. Hopefully in the future they will make more tough cuts. Just because they are the government doesn’t mean that they can’t cut jobs as well.
It seems to be a theme in government that the jobs are “stable” because nobody ever gets laid off. If they need more money, they just eliminate “loopholes” or raise taxes. Enough is enough.

Patrick,
I don’t mean to speak for her, but I do think Juls is hurting, but I think she’s upset about a branch of the library being closed.

Just to be clear, as Pat says, the fireworks are sponsored by Harford Mutual Insurance Co. this year. The whole day is organized by Bel Air Independence Day Committee, Inc., a not-for-profit volunteer organization, with support from the Town of Bel Air. The fireworks are definitely still on, and will be as terrific as ever.
Juls says
My apologies – I saw that the county was assisting and we know that usually means money. I mentioned the fireworks because, although it is sponsored by other companies, there is extra police, traffic control, etc, that the county has to sponsor. I also didn’t want to be picking on one group. If we are going to cut out fun things, it should effect everyone, not a single ethnic group – I was being fair.

From what I understand, the additional deputies and Bel Air police officers will each be getting paid 9 hours overtime at time and a half. Each Bel Air officer will be teamed up with a deputy. No overkill here. I’d like to make $50 an hour for standing around doing nothing. I’d like to make $50 an hour for doing pretty much anything at all. I appears this madness will never stop.

I think that we should invite the immigration authorities to attend.
Dad says
I had a 1971 El Camino. Loved that car.

Maybe they should invite NIS and ICE !!! I’m not a hate monger, but I see what is happening around Maryland. Illegal Immigrants are taking all the low income jobs that our teens would normaly get. My son was just replaced by a Mexican non-English speaking immigrant yesterday. Blame Nick and Spiro at the new Bellissimo’s in Bel Air for fueling the spread of illegal immigrants and the decline of teen workforce in Harford County. I commened and celibrate those in the Hispanic community. I frown on our local and Federal Governments for not enforcing our laws and not protecting our borders. I most of all frown on Bellissimo’s for staffing their establishment with all local teens until the business is good and now is replacing all of them. Hope you know your spanish when you go to eat Italian!!!
