BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis team will look to extend its unbeaten streak as it begins the 2009 campaign on September 9 at Gloucester in Sewell, N.J. after posting a perfect, 10-0, record in 2008.
The Fighting Owls kick-off the 2009 season with a three game roadstand, beginning with the defending Division-III Region XIX champion and fourth-place NJCAA finishing Roadrunners before opening conference play at Cecil (Sept. 11) and at Hagerstown (Sept. 14), both of which competed in the Division-I national tournament.
September 18 will see the Owls welcome another Region XIX foe as Division-III fifth place national finisher Mercer travels to Bel Air for Harford’s first home match of the season before the two-day Harford Invitational Tournament commences on September 19.
The Owls were edged by Gloucester by just two points at last year’s invitational, which also saw the likes of Region XXI champion Rhode Island, Mercer, and Region XV power Fashion Institute of Technology. The Owls would get retribution a few weeks later as they claimed the Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional Championship crown while Gloucester finished third.
Harford will travel to Montgomery College-Rockville (Sept. 22) and Mercer (Sept. 24) before competing in the ITA regional tournament again in 2009, from September 25-27.
October will see the Owls host six home matches along with the NJCAA Region XX Tournament beginning with MDJUCO conference-rivals Montgomery College-Rockville (Oct. 2) and Cecil (Oct. 7). Harford’s lone away match will be on October 9 as they travel to Region XIX-foe Brookdale before finishing the regular season with a four-match homestand that will pit them against Hagerstown (Oct. 12), Gloucester (Oct. 14), NCAA Division-III St. Mary’s (Oct. 16) and ASA (Oct. 20).
The Owls will host the NJCAA Region XX Tournament from October 23-24, while the Division-I NJCAA Tournament will be held from May 1-6, 2010.
