From Harford County government:
(Bel Air, MD) – – Harford County will host the 2013 and 2014 U. S. Youth Soccer Region I championship. The national tournament will be held at the Cedar Lane Regional Park.
“This is a major achievement for the people of Harford County,” stated Harford County Executive David R. Craig. “The soccer tournament should bring thousands of visitors to Harford County and more than $20 million dollars in revenue to the area during the two-years the tournament will be hosted at Cedar Lane Park,” the county executive remarked.
The Harford County Office of Economic Development has been working with Terry Hasseltine, director of the Maryland sports marketing office, in an effort to help further develop sports marketing and tourism initiatives for Harford County. Harford County Office of Tourism manager Wini Roche will work with Hasseltine and the soccer tournament officials to help ensure the players and families have a positive experience during their visit to Harford County and the State of Maryland.
Approximately 3,500 – 4,000 youngsters, ages 12 -19 will participate in the U. S. Youth Soccer Region I tournament in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Additionally between family and players, nearly 15,000 room nights of lodging are expected each year.
“We were able to offer a great location, world class facilities and an experienced management team in our bid to host this outstanding national event,” stated Jim Richardson, Director of the Office of Economic Development.
“This is exactly what we envisioned when we chose to build a recreational venue such as Cedar Lane Regional Park,” stated County Executive Craig. “I see a bright future for sporting events such as this in Harford County, and we will continue working to make smart and timely investments in initiatives that will yield big dividends to our citizens and business community. Turf fields are great not only for tournaments such as this, but everyday parks and recreation programs for our youth as well,” Craig stated.
