BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s tennis team fell to the reigning NJCAA Divison-III Region XIX champion and national fourth-place finisher, Gloucester, 8-1, in its season-opener on Wednesday at Harford.
The Roadrunners (1-0) swept the doubles matches, while sophomore Josh Meier (Belcamp, Md./Home School) was the only winner for the Fighting Owls (0-1), edging Josh Stepkin, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Stepkin was victorious in the No. 1 doubles match as he teamed with Steve Suboleski to down Meier and freshman Cory Litka (York, Pa./Aberdeen/East Stroudsburg), 8-5, with Suboleski also earning a 6-2, 6-3 win over Litka at No.1 singles.
Ed Thompson and Jared Randazzo were double-winners for Gloucester, defeating sophomore Steve Heagy (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and freshman Marc Donars (Joppa, Md./Harford Tech) in the No. 2 doubles slot, 8-5, while Thompson downed Heagy, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Randazzo dispatched Donars, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot.
Aaron Hartman and Ryan Airo were also double-winners as they wrapped up the match with a 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles over freshmen Chay McGrath (Street, Md.) and Walker Bazemore (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) before Hartman defeated McGrath, 6-3, 6-1 and Airo blanked Bazemore, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively.
The Fighting Owls do not return to action for two weeks, when they host Rhode Island (Mar. 25) and Mercer (Mar. 26) before holding the Harford Invitational Tournament from Mar. 27-28.
