From the Aberdeen IronBirds:
Two errors in the bottom of the seventh inning did in the IronBirds on Wednesday night, as the Staten Island Yankees defeated Aberdeen 6-5.
The IronBirds scored in their first at bat. With one man out, 2B LJ Hoes doubled to left-center field. LF Kipp Schutz knocked him in with a single to left field, giving Aberdeen the early 1-0 lead.
Staten Island answered right back in the second. Aberdeen starter LHP Blake Mechaw walked the lead-off man CF Eduardo Sosa, and hit LF Shane Brown with a pitch. Sosa and Brown executed a double-steal, moving to second and third. 1B Kevin Mahoney lined a single into right field, knocking in Sosa and tying the game. DH Kelvin De Leon then singled in Brown, making it a 2-1 ball game.
Mechaw’s troubles continued in the second. The southpaw walked four batters in the inning, knocking in a run and making it a 3-1 score. Mechaw exited after waling in a run. He lasted 1.2 innings, and surrendered three runs on two hits. Mechaw walked five, hit a batter, and struck out two. LHP Jason Gurka came in with the bases loaded and recorded the final out without allowing a run.
Aberdeen cut the deficit in half in the third inning. With two men down, RF Tyler Kolodny ripped a double to left field. 1B David Anderson grounded a single down the right field line to knock him in, and make it a 3-2 ball game.
The IronBirds would re-take the lead in the fourth inning. With one man down, C Joe Oliveira picked up his first professional hit, a bunt single down the third base line. After SS Pedro Florimon struck out, Hoes singled to right field. With runners on the corners, Schutz tripled off the right field wall. The two-run extra-base knock gave the IronBirds the lead. After Kolodny was hit by a pitch, Anderson hit an infield single behind the second base bag, knocking in Schutz, and giving Aberdeen a 5-3 lead.
The Yankees took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh. Brown reached after being hit by a pitch. With one man out, Mahoney walked, putting runners on first and second. De Leon grounded a ball to second. The IronBirds tried to turn two, but Hoes threw the ball away, loading the bases. SS Jose Mojica came through with a two-run double to right, tying the game at five. 3B Garrison Lassiter grounded a ball towards third base. The ball skipped off 3B Adam Gaylord’s glove, allowing the go-ahead run to score.
RHP Richard Martinez (1-0) got the win after tossing a scoreless inning of relief. LHP Brandon Holloway (0-1) took the loss. He allowed two runs, neither of which were earned, in 1.2 innings. RHP Chase Whitley pitched two scoreless innings for his second save of the season.
The IronBirds will try to snap its three-game losing streak and even the series up at one game apiece tomorrow evening at Richmond County Savings Bank Park. LHP Justin Anderson is scheduled to pitch for Aberdeen. First pitch will be at 7:00.
