Fishkill, NY – With the scored tied at two in the bottom of the ninth inning, 2B Robby Price hit an RBI-single to left field to give the Hudson Valley Renegades a win over the Aberdeen IronBirds Thursday night, 3-2.
The Renegades got on the scoreboard in the first. With one man out, DH Derek Dietrich was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a ground ball out and advanced to third base on a passed ball. 1B Phil Wunderlich knocked him in with a single, giving Hudson Valley the lead.
They doubled their lead in the second. 3B Nick Schwaner led off the inning with a double. He advanced to third on a ground out to second and scored on a wild pitch.
The IronBirds cut the deficit in half in the third. With one out, LF Kipp Schutz singled. On an attempted steal of second, Hudson Valley C Mayo Acosta threw the ball into center field, allowing Schutz to get to third. He scored on 1B Michael Flacco’s ground out to short, making it a 2-1 game.
Aberdeen tied it up in the fifth. 2B Omar Casamayor led the inning off with a triple into the right field corner. Schutz knocked him in with a double to center field.
IronBirds RHP Scott Copeland would exit two batters into the seventh. In six-plus innings, Copeland surrendered two runs, both earned, on three hits. He walked one and struck out six.
With the scored tied at two in the bottom of the ninth, the Renegades rallied. Wunderlich led things off with a single. Chris Winder came into the game to pinch-run for him. After IronBirds RHP T.R. Keating struck out Schwaner, RF Burt Reynolds hit a ground ball towards the middle. Aberdeen SS Auburn Donaldson couldn’t field it cleanly, moving runners up to first and second. Price then lifted a single down the left field line, knocking in Winder and giving the Renegades the “W”.
RHP Austin Hubbard (2-0) got the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Keating (0-1) took the loss. Keating allowed just the one unearned run in 2.1 innings of relief.
The IronBirds and Renegades will meet in game two of this three-game set Friday evening at Dutchess Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. You can catch all the action on the internet radio broadcast at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com. The PNC Bank IronBirds Pregame Show will begin at 6:50 PM.
The IronBirds return to Aberdeen on Sunday July 4th to open a three-game set with the Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Following the game will be the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular!
