Staten Island, NY – Justin Anderson, Ashur Tolliver and Steve Mazur combined to pitch a one-hit shutout on Tuesday evening, as the Abrerdeen IronBirds defeated the Staten Island Yankees 3-0. It’s the third time this season the IronBirds have one-hit an opponent, and the second time they’ve done it against the Yankees.
The lone Yankee to get a hit was leadoff man Shane Brown. He did so in his first at bat of the ball game.
The IronBirds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third. With one man out, Michael Rooney walked. Sammie Starr doubled, putting two in scoring position with one out. Austin Knight grounded out to the second baseman, knocking in Rooney from third and advancing Starr from second to third. Schutz then stepped up and singled to center, scoring Starr.
Anderson, Aberdeen’s starter, left the game after the fifth. He allowed no runs on just one hit. Anderson walked two and struck out five.
Aberdeen tacked on a third run in the eighth inning. With two on and two out, Joel Polanco knocked in a run on a single to left field, making it 3-0.
Anderson (4-4) got the win. Matt Jernstad (1-1) took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of work. Mazur (6) got the save after pitching two perfect innings (including four strikeouts).
The IronBirds head to Brooklyn to open up a three-game series with the Cyclones tomorrow at MCU Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Catch the internet broadcast at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com. The WAWA Show will begin at 6:50 PM.
