Despite the best efforts of the 100 firefighters who battled the blaze for several hours Thursday afternoon, fire destroyed a 6,000-square-foot Fallston home, causing nearly $2 million in damage.
At 12:54 p.m. Thursday, a neighbor reported a fire at the two-story wood-framed dwelling owned by Raymond and Claire Santiago at 2008 Watervale Road in Fallston.
The three-alarm fire brought 100 firefighters from Fallston, Joppa, Bel Air, Jarrettsville, and Kingsville to the scene and took three hours to bring under control.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the origin and preliminary cause of the fire, but said a smoke alarm was present and working in the home.
The fire caused an estimated $1.3 million in damage to the home and another $500,000 in estimated damage to its contents.
The Santiago family bought their 6,039-square-foot home in 2006 for $1 million.
The Red Cross is assisting the family.
