The 5th Annual Scholarship & Awards Banquet in Celebration of Finer Womanhood, “Honoring Women of Color in Ministry,” was held Sunday, March 27 at the Richlin Ballroom. Harford County Government employee, Pastor Sylvia Bryant, of the New Destiny Evangelistic Church in Edgewood, was honored for her demonstrated commitment to faith-based service.
Dr. Sylvia Yvonne White Bryant co-pastors with her husband, Dr. Allen M. Bryant, Jr., at New Destiny Evangelistic Church in Edgewood, Maryland. Dr. Bryant is committed to community service. She works full-time for the Harford County Department of Community Services assisting with the Human Relations Commission, the Commission for Women, the Office of Drug Control Policy, and serves on the Mediation Commission. She is a member of FACE-IT, a faith based coalition charged with combating substance abuse and its related issues in Harford County, and Marriage Works of Harford County, a faith-based coalition dedicated to promoting life-long, healthy marriages through collaboration, education, and resources.
Additionally, Dr. Bryant maintains ties with the Harford County Cancer and Tobacco Community Coalition (Tobacco Section), a community coalition that helps to oversee the use of tobacco/cigarette restitution funds resulting from a major lawsuit against the tobacco industry. She has also served on the Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) Advisory Committee, a subcommittee of the County’s Delinquency Prevention Policy Board that gathered and analyzed data to determine if minority youth are disproportionately represented in the child serving systems of Harford County, and developed a plan to address these findings.
Also recognized at the event were Pastor Patricia Pringle of the Evangelistic Church of Deliverance in Havre de Grace, and Pastor Miriam Tatuem of Helping Hands Ministries in Churchville. The Reverend Laurette Halstead, a chaplain for Upper Chesapeake Health in Bel Air, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies.
The banquet was organized by Omicron Chi Zeta, a local chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., a non-profit, international organization consisting of professional and college women dedicated to the ideals of scholarship, service, sisterly love, and finer womanhood.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event went directly to endow the Dolores H. Janifer Memorial Scholarship Fund via the Harford County Z-HOPE Foundation (the charitable arm of Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter).
Dolores H. Janifer Memorial Scholarships are presented annually to Harford County high school graduates who are pursuing a college degree or a certificate from an accredited technical school. Applicants may be current high school seniors, current college students, or current technical school students. Complete applications are judged on three elements: scholarship, character, and financial need. The awards are non-renewable grants in the amount of $1,000.00 each.
