From the office of Harford County Councilman Jim McMahon:
*I pass this interesting environmental note along from Del Wayne Norman:*
I thought you may be please to hear the good news from the Department of Natural Resources’ 2011 Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey. The Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab population is at its 2nd highest level since 1997! In 2010, watermen around the Bay brought 60% more crabs to dock than in 2009 — (88-94 million pounds) — about 42 % of the total population. For the first time since the early 1990s we have been at or below the acceptable harvest level of 46% for three consecutive years. Together, these numbers tell us that our conservation measures are working to achieve our primary management goal: to maintain a healthy abundance of spawning age adults, even as annual reproduction varies due to environmental conditions.
