On Monday, May 9, 2011 at approximately 2:48 p.m., Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call from a residence in the 2600 block of Chestnut Hill Road in Forest Hill, MD. The caller indicated that Michael Lee Cox, age 33, and his girlfriend, age 26, of Nottingham, MD were involved in a physical domestic dispute in the front of the residence. The caller also indicated that Michael Cox was in possession of a knife and threatening to commit suicide.
In an effort to escape from Cox, the female victim got into her red 2005 Dodge Neon and locked the doors. Cox then forcefully took the car keys from a nearby family member and drove away from the residence with the victim inside the vehicle.
Cox then stopped the car at Walters Mill Road and Grier Nursery Road and pushed the female victim out of the vehicle onto the side of the road. As deputies were responding to the call, it was seen stopped on the side of the road. As the deputy approached the vehicle, Cox shouted at the deputy before quickly fleeing the scene leaving the injured female victim on the side of the road with the deputy. The female victim, age 26, was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center by Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company with non-life-threatening injuries.
A BOLO (be on the lookout) was issued for the vehicle. Within moments, Cox was spotted by Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies traveling southbound on MD 165 at SR 24 traveling at a high rate of speed. A short chase ensued. The pursuit ended when Cox, in an effort to avoid deputies, hit the curb and disabled the vehicle at the BP Gas Station in the 1700 block of Jarrettsville Road in Jarrettsville MD. There were no injuries to any bystanders or deputies involved.
Cox was taken into custody without incident and transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center by Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company with non-life-threatening injuries. In addition to several traffic related charges, Cox faces charges for car jacking, 1st degree assault and robbery.
