From the Office of the State Fire Marshal:
Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged five people with the discharge of a destructive device. The one adult and four juveniles had manufactured and placed a chemical reaction device on the front porch of a home where it exploded.
The incident at 3409 Henry Harford Drive occurred on Saturday May 14th just before midnight. The occupant of the home discovered the device just as it exploded. She was uninjured from the incident and there was no property damage. Investigators gained evidence which lead to the identification of the suspects. Kadian Westney, 18, of Edgewood was taken into custody this afternoon when surrendered himself to investigators. All four juveniles were from the Edgewood and Abingdon area and ages ranged from sixteen to seventeen. The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents.
All five have been charged with the manufacturing, possession, and discharge of a destructive device. Kadian is currently being held on a $5,000 bond at the Harford County Detention Center. The Harford County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the initial response and investigation.

Wonder what they will get…true indication of Harford law stance. While your at it how about getting us the outcome of the bomb threat that was called in a few months ago as a prank by teenagers. How many of these is it gonna take for Harford to realize in this day and age these are not considered pranks but potential acts of chargeable crimes.
Ron says
Yeah I’m wondering what ever happened with that too? Hopefully Dagger can do a follow-up with HCSO.
Dan says
I’m guessing that the “chemical reaction device” was something like a two liter plastic bottle with baking soda and vinger. They’re loud but basically harmless, but still I don’t think these kids cared one way or the other. Probably something they saw on YouTube … thanks YouTube for teaching idiots how to be even more idiotic.
Richard says
Harmless huh…. Go grab a container of Drano, put it in a glass and then splash it in your face… Then tell me how harmless these devices are
B says
More like a Drano bomb…have one of those explode on you and see if it does any damage.
JohhnyBee says
Hey Dan if you can get a soda liter bottle to explode with baking soda and vinegar I will give you $100. Wake up, that combination can in no way or form can cause the overpressure to rupture the bottle. They must use dangerous but household chemicals that can burn or blind you. Too many folk think these devices along with fireworks are just harmless youthful pranks.
Dan says
Any number of chemical reactions can provide enough pressure to rupture a plastic bottle. Drain-o and aluminimum foil is just one. The first time I saw it done it was with just dry-ice.
firstname.lastname. says
why do you blame YouTube for it?
Dan says
Because they probably would have never know how to it if it wasn’t for YouTube.
firstname.lastname. says
I didn’t see anything in the newsclip about YouTube, which by the way, I find very educational in it’s own right, and annoying in other ways. I bet if I googled the subject I could find hundreds of websites with the same info, but I don’t blame Google for it.
Dan says
As far back as I can remember people have been blowing up plastic bottle for as long as there’ve been plastic bottles. This is nothing new, but it was never as popular and widespread as it is now. YouTube is great at spreading information in easy to understand videos to large masses of people. Only a small percentage of people would care enough about this kind of thing to take the time to read how to do it, but put it into a 30 second video and the whole world will watch.
Pavel314 says
Kadian from Edgewood? With friends from Abinddon? Sounds like a black bunch but hard to believe that black kids would have the intelligence, skills or dedication to make a chemical bomb. The Dagger should report race in these instances to give us a better understanding of what all this Section Eight housing is bringing to the area vis-a-vis ethnic diversity.
Richard says
Does it really matter where they obtained the infomation on how to do it? There are thousands of movies and books about how to be a hit man or assassin, should we blame the author or director for Joe scum bag grabbing a gun and thinking it’s ok to kill someone, or perhaps look a little closer to home for the problem… Get a grip on reality
It’s all about knowing right from wrong, which starts at home with the parents
firstname.lastname. says
Thanks Richard, my thoughts exactly.
firstname.lastname. says
Paul (PAVEL314), a search of the Maryland Judiciary Web site shows Kadian as not being black. Why are you trying to make it a race issue?
Richard, my thoughts exactly.

If these were just making this for their own entertainment, say in a field, I’d be more sympathetic to them, even though technically they were in possession of harmful materials. But putting something like this on some else’s property is definitly not cool; it’s a form of terrorism similar to those idiots who shoot paint balls at people from moving cars.
I probably could have been locked up for the potato launchers I made when I was young, but we knew enough not to endanger others.
Pavel314: Your remarks clarify you as a stone cold idiot.
Iamwetalldid says
Pavel can be forgiven for thinking Kadian is a “Canadian” name.
