From Harford County Government:
(Bel Air, MD) – During the period May 26 through June 7, 2011, Harford County government employees took part in the Step Up to Stock Up for Seniors challenge. Employees were asked to form teams of no more than ten people to help stock the Harford County Department of Community Services’ Office on Aging’s pantry, which provides emergency food and personal hygiene supplies to seniors in need in Harford County. Teams earned points by the amount and type of donation.
On June 7, a Harford Transit Link bus helped collect the donations and delivered them to the Office on Aging. The challenge was a huge success, with nearly 100 boxes/bags of food collected and over $1,000 in gift certificates. Parks Pantry, consisting of Harford County Parks & Recreation employees Sue Sapp, Joyce Carroll-Zang, Ben Cox, Maureen Flickenger, Evelyn Forte, Hillary Gunn, Kathleen Hall, Arden McClune, Michael Watkins and Ann Woodard, won the competition with 16 bags of food and over $500 in gift certificates.
Many of the Office on Aging’s clients struggle daily with whether to purchase food, pay their rent, buy medications, or pay utility bills. Nationwide, nearly six million people age 60+ face a daily struggle to put food on the table. Here in Maryland, over 11% of the elderly population is threatened by hunger and 14% of the elderly live below the poverty level. Harford County employees greatly contributed to stocking the pantry and helping our seniors in need.
Teams included: Parks Pantry (Parks & Recreation, Tollgate office), Tequila Mockingbirds (McFaul Activities Center), 911 Delivers (Emergency Operations Center), WOC (Circuit Court), Mangia (Community Services), Revenue Can Can Girls (Treasury), Team Elections (Board of Elections), The Giving Link (Harford Transit), Highways, Chance’s Chicklets (County Executive’s Office), and Economic Development.
