From Harford Friends School:
Street, MD – September 29, 2011 – Entering its 7th year of operation, Harford Friends School has appointed a highly regarded and experienced team of teacher-administrators to advance the school’s mission, vision, and service to its students and families.
Karen De Mey, Cheryl Foley, and Clare Pitz comprise the academic administrative team that has more than twenty years of administrative experience, more than fifty years of teaching experience, and boasts four prior appointments as either vice-principals or principals in both private and pubic schools. “The team is fantastically strong and committed to our students, families, and Friends education,” noted founding Head of School Jonathan Huxtable. “Each is an outstanding teacher and administrator who has gained the trust, confidence, and admiration of her peers.”
Clare Pitz teaches 8th grade English and serves as the Assistant Head of School for Student Life. In her role, Mrs. Pitz deals directly with students, families, and is a primary steward of school atmosphere and culture. “I thoroughly enjoy teaching English to the eighth graders. My role as Assistant Head for Student Life gives me a great opportunity to get to know all of the students through student-run school activities,” Mrs. Pitz commented on her role at Harford Friends. A resident of Fawn Grove, PA, Mrs. Pitz formerly served as principal at both Towson Catholic and Notre Dame Prep. She also served as a vice-principal in the Baltimore County Public School system. She comes to Friends several years after her husband Raymond Pitz, former math department chair at Towson and Owings Mills high schools started teaching 8th grade math at Friends. The two are parents of an HFS graduate now in high school at West Nottingham Academy.
Karen De Mey teaches the Intermediate (3rd/4th) grade class at Friends and was a member of the school’s founding Lower School faculty in 2009. Mrs. De Mey was the principal at Advent Lutheran before coming to Friends. As the Assistant Head of School for Program, Mrs. De Mey coordinates the inquiry-based, integrated, hands-on program that makes the Friends school program so unique. Of her role, Mrs. De Mey states her emphasis will be to “ensure the continuity of a challenging, pertinent curriculum while still entrusting the educators at Friends to use their creativity and considerable expertise.” Mrs. De Mey is the parent of two current HFS students and a graduate, currently a sophomore at Calvert Hall.
Cheryl Foley, middle school science teacher and Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning, is a supremely talented educator who is actively engaged in mentoring all members of the faculty in best practices for teaching and learning. She is a student of the art and science of teaching as much as she is a teacher of both the gifted and talented students and teachers at Friends. “I am so excited to be working with such a dedicated and talented staff. Expanding, refining and polishing my abilities to engage each child in his or her own education is a career-long pursuit of mine,” reflects Mrs. Foley. “I am excited to be able to share and shape that vision for our HFS faculty.” Mrs. Foley is a parent of a current student and a Friends School graduate who is currently a freshman at Calvert Hall
