Harford Community College Marks National Poetry Month With “Poetree”

Throughout April, the Harford Community College Library celebrated National Poetry Month and National Library Week through the “Poetree,” an interactive display of favorite and original poems contributed by HCC students and employees.

The Poetree, a tree whose brightly-colored leaves were decorated with poems, was displayed in the Library, inviting many members of the campus community to take a moment to read and contribute poems to the display. As April progressed, the tree blossomed with a profusion of poems: from the Renaissance to the 21st Century, from William Shakespeare to Ogden Nash, from oft-published poets to Harford’s own student poets.

The Poetree, by its interactive nature, enabled individuals to become part of the flourishing literary, intellectual, creative energies at Harford Community College. “Each year, the Library’s National Library week celebration includes a focus on poetry. This year, thanks to the imaginative work of Library employee Lucien Meadows, we had a particularly visible celebration, which drew a lot of attention and participation,” said Library Director Carol Allen.

During National Library Week, April 9-14, in addition to the Poetree, the Library hosted a variety of events including a Used Book Sale (which raised $1,000 to fund text book scholarships for Harford Community College students); My Five Favorite Books (print and online posters featuring the favorites of HCC students and employees); discussions on Facebook and in-Library posters; forgiveness of Library fines; and drawings for a Keurig coffee maker and baskets of flowers.
