Longtime 98 Rock afternoon DJ “Stash” is “no longer with” the FM channel or its AM companion, WBAL 1090 AM, the stations said Thursday, four days after he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol following a three-car crash in Abingdon.
The move was announced in a statement posted on the WBAL 1090 AM web site.
“We have parted ways,” program manager Dave Hill said. It was not clear whether Stash, whose real name is Stephen G. Smith, 48, of Bel Air, was fired. Hill told WBAL that he would have no further comment as the matter is a personnel issue, but wished Smith well.
Smith was charged with nine offenses including driving under the influence of alcohol after Maryland State Police said he caused an accident shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday night involving two other vehicles which sent five people to the hospital.
Smith had a recent history of traffic citations, including a previous charge of driving under the influence of alcohol in October and several speeding citations. According to court records, he appeared in Baltimore County District Court in Towson on Thursday for a speeding citation dating to January, and was fined $160.

I also heard he was driving on a suspended DL. Whether true on not I am not sure BUT what he really needs is rehab help because he is gonna kill someone if he doesn’t stop driving while impaired

Like I said before…
Actions have consequences…
Stash, admit you have a problem, seek help and then move on positively with your life.
frankthetank says
Stash had a MAJOR problem! Glad he was let go, he will not be on the air anymore in Maryland! Thank god
Clarified Butter says
I’ll bet you $1,000,000.00 that Stash will be on the air in Maryland once again! One problem doesn’t condemn you for life, especially in the radio industry. He did not do anything stupid while on the air so he will be there again, if he wants to. Its amazing to see how people like for someone to lose their job for something that wasn’t work related. He probably left work voluntarily to enter a rehab or something. That crap looks good to judges. BUT REMEMBER, rehab is a bunch of crap and most rehab facilities are filled with people who don’t intend on staying clean, just people trying to do what they gotta do to get through. Rehab is for quitters……………………
Common Cents says
Are you kidding me?!? Radio DJs, athletes, and other celebrities are role models for our children. Their actions on their own time DO have consequences.
BTW, I once had to fire a contractor when we found out she had a felony DUI 5 years before joining the company. Why? Company policy. So, please, before spouting off, know what the he!& you’re talking about.
As for rehab, again, you show your ignorance. Some do go to avoid jail time. But most realize they need to change. Their failure to stay clean is a function of their external support system and lack of self control – which is what landed them in rehabilitate to begin with.
Anne says
My children’s role models are not what yours are. I do agree with you that ALL of us are responsible for our actions. I hope and pray that others learn from what Stash has done to his life/family/career. Keith Mills is a wonderful example of how getting healthy works!
Espo129 says
Stash made a mistake, we all do!!!! Do not condem a man for making a few mistakes. I have noticed that Kurt McQewen has been filling in for Mickey lately. What are the chances that he graps Stashes spot?
DINO TAYLOR says
I personally Know Stash we have been friends for over 25 years now he is a great guy who made a bad choice. I do not agree with the statement “Radio DJs, athletes, and other celebrities are role models for our children” That is a crock of Shit!!!!! its a cop out for bad parenting don’t get me wrong I was and still am, a fan of a lot of athletes & celebrities however my dad and mom were my roll models!!!! The pressure of trying to live ones life for themselves is overwhelming in itself . So what gives you a right to expect any human being to be a role model to anyones kids but there own. In the end it’s there kids they let down not yours there failures in no way changes your kids lives. People disappoint people it is a part of life but we should learn from there mistakes as well as there successes! Like I have told my kids inspire to be the best you you can be, do not strive to be someone else ! So I like to say to all the kids who read this the true role models you should look up to should be your parents, there the ones that work hard everyday to put a roof over your head, food in your stomach & clothes on your back! NOT A SPORTS STAR, NOT A DJ NOT ANYONE!
Common Cents says
Dino & Faith,
My children are 5 & 3. It’s safe to say that their role models include MickeyMouse and Tinkerbell. So, before you confuse yourselves even more, when I refer to “our children”, I mean the majority of children – not mine.
I had improperly assumed that people on this site had enough “common cents” to realuze that someone like me who shows strong family values would also be a strong enough parent to make sure their children have appropriate role models.
I guess I was wrong.
David A. Porter says
Rehab is not a load of crap. The people who have the chance to go to rehab and fail to take the chance they are offered are simply making the same poor choices they have made that brought them there. In my life I have tried to get the court to intervene in the troubled life of a girl with four children from three different fathers. In February of last year I was told she did not represent a physical threat. This Monday she goes to trial for driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident and filing a false police report. She has also defrauded the state of Maryland for $20,000 in unemployment insurance benefits. Her parents have done nothing except provide her an attorney and enable to drive on the road with the cars that they have co-signed for her. It’s all about personal choice. And it’s all about the havoc these people unleash on the rest of us, and the ones they profess to love, because of their poor personal choices.

Your a jilted lover looking for payback.
Just post her info on here and someone will do something.
You obviously have not been doing it right.
ps.
In my life I have:
saved several addicts including pulling them away from armed dealers,
reformed a thief,
turned in criminals including family,
but most of all I’ve known when to let the hopeless ones go.
let yours go
David A. Porter says
And what have you done to help her? You can criticize all you like but other people keep letting her down and enabling her including the state. The point you have obviously missed is this place is filled with self righteous people that would rather pay her to sit in a corner and screw herself up as well as her kids. Your criticism speaks volumes of the bitterness you feel… I’m waiting to forgive her, but she doesn’t have the brains to ask for it, or to feel remorse for the other people she has hurt and used besides me. And she has used you too… each time she gets support from the state that you pay taxes to. Next time, post your real name so I can look you up and see how decent you really are. Otherwise, snipe from the dark place you hide in.
David A. Porter says
After further reflection (and introspection), I can see we both need to be more judicious and discerning in the people we allow in our lives. I want to save one girl and her four minor children. You seem to have your hands full with the people you surround yourself with. My life is good because typically I keep bad people out of it, and my association with her has improved on that filter… how are you doing?
Publius says
That is a very true comment about knowing when to let the hopeless ones go. Some people claim to want help and only want a reprieve from the immediate consequences. Most often addictions require a not only a commitment. They require an active change in lifestyle and association along with the treatment.
Q says
Time to change the record. I’ve heard this too many times before.
Anne says
Could you be any more ignorant? Places such as Father Martin -Ashely are not places where people go to look good for Judges. My Father is a Judge and Father Martin saved his life AND countless others. Get well Stash.
faith says
it’s just ashame for his family. i think they are the biggest victims of all, more than the people even hit in the accident because since this happened, now they are affected for the rest of their lives while those people in the accident can live on. i feel so terrible for his autistic son, and young daughters. may god be with you all…
i know his family reads these comments… just respect them people. stop bashing on someone you barely know. i dont condone these actions but honestly, the problem is worst enough for his family.
we understand, he will get punished and sent away probably but let it be. we get it- you don’t agree with what happened. me neither, but for the sake of his family, please move on.
Common Cents says
Faith,
While your heart is in the right place, your advice is misguided. If his family loves him (and I’m sure they do), then they should realuze they have failed to successfully intervene in his life. I’m not suggesting such an intervention is an easy task, but it’s still a failure.
Public criticism and family shame is a tool in our society (like it or not) that can be motivational force to help the family.
So I have no issues with Stash-bashing at all. He earned it, and people should feel free to let loose. As a fan, I have been let down. His family should be left out of the discussion completely, and we should support them with our prayers.
faith says
His family, meaning his daughters tried to stop him from doing it. HIS actions, not theirs. If someone is an alcoholic, no matter what ANYONE says they will still do it. So no, my advice is not misguided because you should not under any circumstances blame the family for bringing this upon themselves. Stash’s fault, and his family should not have to deal with this. Its ashame, and all im asking is for people to move on and care about their lives instead.
BBC says
Faith: I agree, everyone affected has been victimized, but he should have thought about the possibilities before he drank and drove. Most people never fully realize the consequences until something terrible happens. Hopefully a lot of people learn from this.
LOL says
Maybe 98 Rock shouldn’t have been letting an employee who has problems with alcohol host all their beer chugging events.
Not only did they let him do it, they also canned him when he couldn’t control his problem. LOL
bob says
Its 98 Rock , the rock station that’s into pushing Porn, Drinking, and smoking weed on all of its 17 to 20 something fans so what do you expect, great goup of role models. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!!!! 98 Rock sucks anymore, music, morning show sucks not like the good old days!
Estella says
Wow. Too much to say. First and foremost, I sincerely hope the victims of this “accident” recover fully in all ways – physically, mentally, financially… I’m sure the list goes on. What Stash has done is far beyond what some here label as a mistake. I thought you learned from your mistakes, so if this incident was a mistake, what were the rest of his documented shenanigans prior that he obviously didn’t learn from? Practice?
There is one party fully at fault and entirely in the wrong here. The excuses, the enabling, the “he has a great family”, the “he’s a good guy” crap? Great? Think of that family and make a REAL change, brah, because the shit you’re doing now isn’t working so well, is it?
I’m glad he’s lost his job. I’m not glad his family has also lost their livelihood, but they owe it all to the one who should’ve fought for and protected them the most. He failed.
Can he overcome it? Sure, if he wants to. Rehab can work, but for those it doesn’t help, it isn’t an issue of willpower or self control; those relapses are a function of addiction.
It’s outright sad. The resources this man can avail himself to are far, far more than the average person with a problem. He needs to do the right thing for himself and for his family; they deserve better.
And for those who harp that it isn’t the public’s business, the matters of the criminal case and proceedings certainly are. When this fella is a defendant (again), it’s not The Victims of the (Latest) Mayhem v. Stephen Trainwreck, it’s The State of MD v. Stephen Trainwreck.
What a sad, sad mess.
Pete Satia says
Big deal, half the country drives drunk, it’s just bad luck for Stash. You know how many times I left a bar covering one eye? Well I’m not telling, but as I left, there were at least another 30 people getting behind the wheel later.
In fact, I timed it so as to not be on the road when the cops were looking.
Give him his job and probation where he gives samples weekly and at random. Or a blow kit for his car. Jeez.
It’s the 21 century, but some still like to live when life was fun, and less like everyone being like everyone else.
Stash is one of a kind, in knowledge, profession and I hear as a family man. Get past it and don’t punish his family.
Common Sense says
Well do me the favor of notifying the public when you will be out on the road. Cause I for one don’t want my family and I in danger because of your ignorance and lack of respect.
If you want to drink and drive, by all means do so in another life. No one else should have to pay for your mistakes. SMH
BBC says
Pete Satia: I hope to God your post is some kind of satire that I don’t understand. Because if it’s real, you are a sick sick individual. If you want to drink, stay the hell home and don’t endanger the rest of us. I hope you used your real name here and the cops see where you live and what you drive so they can catch you “driving with one eye covered”. You are a pathetic waste.
Country Girl says
Okay people, gotta put my 2 cents in. 1st, I worked with Stash, his wife and son directly. They are extremely nice people and worked hard to help their son get ahead. That being said, being a nice person does not in any way excuse bad behavior. He has had a drinking issue for years! It has been enabled by too many people, including his wife. The accident and loss of job hopefully will turn into a good thing, a wake up call. It is fortunate that no one was seriously injured or killed. My husband was the victim of a drunk driver many years ago. He was hit head on by a guy who came up an exit ramp going the wrong way on the BW Parkway. His car was pushed over a bridge and landed on it’s roof on the road below. He was lucky that the Medivac came quickly which probably saved his life. After being in a coma for 10 days and suffering more broken and open compound fractures then you can count, he spent a year in rehab. He was young enough that he managed to live a normal life but has suffered with pain from it every day. Of course, the drunk driver was uninsured, as I would bet Stash may be. Anyone who gets behind a wheel after drinking over the limit, needs to have the book thrown at them! People die! This is not something to take lightly. So when you say you’ve driven covering one eye and think that’s okay, we’ll it’s not. A family who does not intervene STRONGLY, are enablers. Sometimes it takes tough love. If a drunk driver takes your daughter, son, parent or friends life, you will be singing a different tune.
Pete Satia says
Well now Stash can stay home and get drunk all day, like a bum in the street. He posted that he is going to rehab, which is for quitters.
Let him stay with his extended family at the station and enable his family to live. 98 Rock promotes bar crawls, parties and Prekness. You think cabbies are lined up for that group. Dave Hill and his gang are equal opportunity offenders. They pushed this man, over time, into this state. Now a court will decide his fate, and we will never here Tom him again.
Sobriety will take him years to get used to, before he finds a new way to live. Trust me.
Thankfully Sober says
Dear Clarified Butter & Pete Satia:
Seriously, “rehab is for quitters”, “rehab is a bunch of crap”. Shame on you. Rehab is just that: Rehabilitation. Whether you choose it voluntarily in order to live a better life or are “forced” into it by another means. I was in rehab. because I was a hardcore drunk. I broke no laws and thankfully was never in an accident where I could do harm to others. I did not want to go voluntarily but went anyway to appease my family that I was hurting. Rehab saved my life and I will be forever greatful. I am in no way “preaching” my sobriety to anyone. Heck, I don’t work the steps and am not a dedicated AA member. But what I do know is the amount of dedication that the rehab. facilities give to their clients is immeasurable. And believe me the counselors know who they will truly be able to help and who are just there for appearances sake. But nonetheless they give it there all. And thank goodness for that. Because really, what else is there for an alcholic/addict: jail or death. Anyway, I really hope that Stash gets it this time. Gets clean and stays clean once and for all not only for himself but for his family who truly deserves it. So let me go and do my little happy dance for another day of sobriety!
